Its fame is linked above all to St. Francis and St. Clare, but visiting it also means discovering a charming medieval center, with its stone-paved alleys, intimate squares, arches, and panoramic views of the valley. TheBasilica of St. Francis, the Basilica of St. Clare, and Piazza del Comune are must-see stops, while those with more time can visit the Eremo delle Carceri or continue on to other Umbrian villages. A car can be convenient for getting there and exploring the area, but the hilly terrain and traffic restrictions make it advisable to arrange parking before reaching the historic center: here is some useful information on traffic in Assisi, restricted traffic zones (ZTL), and parking lots.

The historic center: medieval alleyways and scenic hills

One of Assisi’s distinctive features is the way it winds up the hillside: the streets do not follow a flat, regular path, but wind their way through changes in elevation, stairways, and narrow passages. This layout makes for a picturesque stroll, as views of the Umbrian countryside often open up between buildings, but it also requires comfortable shoes and a little extra time to get around.

The tour can begin at the Basilica of St. Francis, a monumental complex consisting of the Upper and Lower Basilicas, famous for its cycle of frescoes and its connection to the saint’s life. From here, you can continue on to Piazza del Comune, the civic heart of the city, and reach the Basilica of Santa Chiara, easily recognizable by its pink and white stone façade. The city center also preserves traces of its Roman and medieval history, which intertwine with its religious heritage and the daily life of commercial activity.

Assisi is also worth exploring off the beaten path: you just need to venture a few streets away from the main thoroughfares to find quieter spots and appreciate the interplay between architecture, landscape, and spirituality.

Assisi’s Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL): Be Aware of the Regulations

Much of the historic center is located within a Limited Traffic Zone. Access by car is therefore restricted, and the rules may vary depending on the season, events, and municipal ordinances. In 2026, the City plans to install five electronic gates to control access to the city center; the schedule and implementation details should be verified through official updates, as they may be modified by subsequent regulations.

Guests staying at a lodging facility in the historic center of Assisi can inquire directly with their host about the procedures fortemporary access required for loading and unloading luggage. The official tourism portal specifies that a dedicated procedure is in place for this purpose, requiring the provision of the license plate number and the dates of arrival and departure. However, this option should not be considered a general authorization to drive or park in the restricted traffic zone (ZTL).

Where to Park in Assisi

The most practical option is to park outside the restricted traffic zone (ZTL) and continue on foot. Among the areas listed on the official tourism website are the Saba Giovanni Paolo II parking lot, near the Basilica of St. Francis; the Saba Porta Nuova parking lot, convenient for reaching the Basilica of St. Clare; and the Mojano and Matteotti parking lots, near the city center. There are also a few free parking areas available , including the one near the cemetery and the one at Porta San Giacomo; it’s always a good idea to check on-site for any restrictions, availability, and parking conditions.

If your trip also includes Santa Maria degli Angeli, you can check out the parking areas in the village and plan your travel by public transportation. For those who want to visit the Eremo delle Carceri, however, a separate itinerary is required: the tourism website notes that the site is not accessible by regular public transportation and that you can get there by car, taxi, or on foot along a trail.

Also, always keep in mind that, in general, the number of visitors to Assisi can increase significantly during Franciscan celebrations, religious holidays, and cultural events. On these days, temporary changes to traffic patterns, parking, and access to the historic center may be in effect. For this reason, before setting out on your trip, it is advisable to check the announcements from the local police.

Nestled on the slopes of Mount Subasio, Assisi is one of Umbria’s most recognizable cities.
