Its historic center is a maze of white-washed alleys, arches, courtyards, and small squares, dominated by the Cathedral Basilica of Maria Santissima della Madia and the Castle of Charles V. It’s a destination perfect for both a cultural stroll and a vacation combining the sea and local cuisine. A car is useful for exploring the beaches and surrounding areas, but during the tourist season, driving and parking in the most central areas require a bit of planning. Here, then, is some useful information on Monopoli’s traffic conditions.

The historic center and the old port: a city best explored on foot

The heart of Monopoli retains its medieval urban layout, with narrow, winding streets leading down to the sea. Unlike the newer areas, where the streets are wider, the historic center is best explored on foot: just walk through a few alleys to go from a quiet little square to a view of the harbor or a church steeped in history.

Among the places to visit are the Cathedral Basilica of Maria Santissima della Madia, recognizable by its monumental façade, and the Castle of Charles V, built on the promontory overlooking the sea. The old harbor offers one of the most picturesque views: traditional boats and the facades of the houses create a scene deeply rooted in the city’s maritime history. Not far away is the Cala Porta Vecchia area, where the city walls meet the sea in a spot that’s very popular during the summer months.

The tour can continue along the city walls and toward the waterfront, taking in a mix of monuments, shops, restaurants, and scenic stops. Because the city center is so compact, it’s not very practical to drive between attractions.

Monopoli’s Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL): Rules and Permits

Monopoli’s historic center is subject to a restricted traffic zone (ZTL), for which the city issues specific permits for transit and, in certain cases, parking. Dedicated procedures are available for various categories, including residents, those with a registered address in the area, lodging establishments, and individuals who need access for documented reasons.

Hours and access procedures are subject to change and seasonal regulations. For this reason, before arriving at a lodging facility in the historic center, it is advisable to ask for specific instructions regarding any permits required and the procedures for loading and unloading luggage. In fact, a reservation does not automatically grant the right to enter Monopoli’s restricted traffic zone (ZTL).

It is also important to distinguish between traffic restrictions and parking regulations: an area accessible by car is not necessarily a place where you can park freely.

Where to Park in Monopoli

To visit the historic center, it’s best to find a parking spot on the outskirts of the old town and continue on foot. The city has designated several paid parking zones in Monopoli, including areas that may be subject to seasonal regulations during peak months.

In 2026, for example, the Porta Vecchia–Porto Bianco area and the former Ina Casa site were subject to a pilot parking regulation, with paid parking spaces and spaces requiring a parking disc. The measure published by the City of Monopoli calls for the pilot program to run through October 31, 2026; for this reason—especially for those visiting Monopoli in the fall or summer—it is important to check the conditions actually in effect upon arrival.

During the summer, the free Park and Ride service—recommended by the city to connect the Via Procaccia area with Piazza D’Annunzio during the scheduled times—may also be useful. Since this is a seasonal service, please check the city’s website for the schedule and operating period.

For a visit lasting a few hours, the most practical option is often to park your car just once and continue on foot through the harbor, the churches, and the city’s coves. If you’d like to spend part of the day at the beach, it’s best to check in advance for the parking areas closest to your chosen beach. Monopoli gets very crowded during the summer, when the town’s beaches and the coves along the coast attract visitors and put a strain on parking spaces.

Monopoli is one of the most charming towns on the Apulian coast, with a historic center overlooking the sea, an ancient harbor where fishing boats share the water with pleasure craft, and a coastline dotted with coves and beaches.
