The main town in Tuscany, Florence is one of the most iconic cities in the world, known for its artistic and historical wealth. Easily accessible by car from other Tuscan cities such as Pisa or Siena, the city of the Lily is especially famous for its UNESCO World Heritage historic center. Within just a few dozen meters, you can admire extraordinary monuments like the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore with Brunelleschi’s dome, one of the greatest masterpieces of Renaissance architecture. Giotto’s Bell Tower, which offers breathtaking views of the city (for those brave enough to climb its steep 400 steps), is another must-see.
Right in front of the Cathedral, you will find the Baptistery of San Giovanni with its famous “Gates of Paradise.”
For art lovers, a mandatory stop is the Uffizi Gallery, one of the most renowned museums in the world, home to works by artists such as Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, and Michelangelo. Crossing the nearby Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge), famous for its stunning views of the Arno River and its ancient goldsmith shops, you will reach Palazzo Pitti, the former residence of the Medici family, housing today several museums and gardens, including the Boboli Gardens, a green oasis in the heart of the city.
Florence is also known for its illustrious figures, the most notable being Dante Alighieri, the supreme poet and author of the Divine Comedy. Dante’s House is now a museum dedicated to his life and works. The Accademia Gallery, on the other hand, houses Michelangelo’s famous David, another symbol of the Renaissance.
There are also plenty of opportunities to relax in the city: beyond strolling along the Arno and exploring the famous medieval squares—Piazza della Signoria, home to the Palazzo Vecchio, or Piazza Santa Croce, where you’ll find the basilica with the tombs of illustrious Italians like Galileo and Machiavelli—you should definitely take a break in one of the traditional trattorias to savor Tuscan specialties. Ribollita, pappa al pomodoro, and bistecca alla fiorentina are just a few examples of the city’s rich gastronomic offerings, complemented by an equally flourishing wine scene!
Renting a car in Florence allows you to easily explore the treasures of the Tuscan countryside. For example, just a 30-minute drive from the city, you can reach Fiesole, a beautiful hilltop town with ancient Roman ruins and breathtaking views of the Arno Valley.
If you’re a wine enthusiast, the Chianti region is your ideal destination. It is less than an hour away from Florence and one of Italy’s most famous wine regions, where you can visit local wineries and taste some of the finest Tuscan wines paired with typical products like olive oil, beans, and fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables.
Not far from Florence, you will also find charming villages such as San Gimignano, known for its medieval towers, or Monteriggioni, a delightful fortified village. Both are perfect for a day trip from Florence, allowing you to immerse yourself in ancient history and the stunning landscapes that have made Tuscany a world-renowned region.
For a day of relaxation, Saturnia’s thermal baths are about two hours away by car. Here, you can enjoy a rejuvenating experience with natural pools and wellness treatments.
