What to see and do in Pisa

The leaning tower of Pisa is surely one of the most famous landmarks of the city: people come here from all over the world to take a picture with it, pretending to keep it straight, and climb it to soak in the beautiful view over the layered fields of Tuscan countryside. However, this peculiar bell tower, whose construction was completed in 1372, is not the only attraction in Pisa: it is in fact just a part of the beautiful Romanesque architectural complex you can visit in Pisa's Cathedral Square (the so-called 'Square of Miracles'), which is considered one the finest examples of European medieval art and includes the Cathedral, the Baptistry and the Monumental Cemetery. Nearby is also the New Hospital of the Holy Spirit, which hosts the Sinopias Museum. At a very short distance from Pisa you can also find archaeological sites from the Etruscan age: we strongly recommend you planning a day trip to Baratti and Populonia, whose territory also comprises some of the prettiest beaches in this area. Lucca is not very far from Pisa too (40 minutes' drive at the most) and it is a city you surely don't want to miss: you can stroll on the ancient city walls along mesmerizing tree-covered alleys from where you will get a spectacular view over the Romanesque churches and palaces which Lucca is full of.

Why hiring a car at Pisa Airport

It often happens to hear tourists ask themselves which one, between Pisa and Florence, is better. We can only recommend you visiting them both to make your own, unbiased opinion: Pisa and Florence both are one-of-a-kind cities and very close to each other, so regardless where you are based during your vacation time you can generally manage to include a trip to both of them. Pisa sure is smaller than Florence, but its surroundings are very amusing too: in fact, they have a lot to offer as far as nature, as well as art and history are concerned. By travelling into the wilderness of Pisa countryside, you will also get the chance of getting in touch with its most authentic culinary legacy avoiding tourist traps (which town centre restaurants typically are). Relying on a private vehicle you will be able to make it through the countryside, the hills and the magical coast near Pisa without sticking to common touristic routes and connect with Tuscany’s purest spirit. Choose Locauto as a car rental partner for your next vacation in Tuscany: our rental office in Pisa airport can meet all your travelling needs thanks to a wide range of vehicles, from electric compact cars to estates and SUVs. Rentals are available both on a short-term and long-term base and you can decide whether to return your car in the same location of pick-up or choose another office for that purpose: for instance, if you're thinking about moving to Florence after a few days in Pisa, you can choose our office in Florence to return your rental car. We have plenty of offices in Italy, North to South: you just have to choose the one that fits your plans best!

Driving to and from Pisa airport

Pisa airport is the main airport in Tuscany. It is actually cheaper and easier to fly here than to Florence, so you should definitely consider landing here and then hiring a car at Pisa airport when you plan your vacation to Tuscany. The 'Galilei' airport in Pisa is just a 15 minutes' drive away from the city center, so it comes very handy when visiting Pisa, but it is also very well connected with many other Tuscan cities such as Florence and Leghorn (via the so-called 'Fi-Pi-Li' motorway) and Lucca (via highway or toll-free motorway). Our rental offices in Pisa are open Monday to Sunday from 8 AM to 11 PM, so you won’t have any issues picking up and dropping off your car regardless of your flight schedules.
