Northwest of Rome, overlooking the Tyrrhenian coast, lies Civitavecchia, a city of Etruscan origin that was later conquered by the Romans. Under their rule, it became one of the most important commercial ports of the Empire, a role it maintained over the centuries under various dominations. Devastated by the bombings of World War II, it was largely rebuilt at the end of the conflict, which is why today Civitavecchia is a modern city rich in attractions for tourists, but not without historical testimonies that survived the wartime events.
For example, one of the city's most iconic places is the Forte Michelangelo, a fortress dating back to the 16th century, built to defend the port from plundering. From a later period is the Civitavecchia Cathedral, dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi, a Baroque-style building that houses several statues and paintings as well as a fine pipe organ that has been recently restored. If you are interested in history, you cannot miss the National Archaeological Museum of Civitavecchia (MANC), housed in a former papal garrison, which exhibits artifacts from the ancient city of Centumcellae and the surrounding area.
After so much "studium" (Latin for “study”), a bit of "otium" (Latin for “leisure”) is in order, and Civitavecchia is able to offer this as well: there are indeed beaches and intimate coves where you can enjoy a few hours of relaxation under the sun. Among the beaches of Civitavecchia, you can find both equipped beaches, such as the Marina beach, also accessible to people with disabilities, and wilder places like the Pirgo Beach, thus called after the old watchtower of the city (the Pirgo) and characterized by an alternation of cliffs, pine forests, and beaches.
While you are in Civitavecchia, don't forget to taste the local dishes: the city excels, naturally, in seafood cuisine, but you can also enjoy many delicious sweets associated with various important occasions and festivities.
Driving away from Civitavecchia for a road trip, your first stop could be in the nearby Tolfa, a medieval town known for the production of fine cured meats and cheeses, beloved for the iconic scenery it offers with its location nestled among the hills. Just a few kilometers from Civitavecchia, you can also visit the Terme Taurine, the ancient Roman baths.
Very close is also Cerveteri, known for its evocative Etruscan necropolis immersed in greenery, characterized by monumental tombs and underground streets. For a day trip, you might consider Lake Bracciano, a perfect destination if you're looking for a relaxing experience in contact with nature; the park surrounding it is crisscrossed by numerous hiking and biking trails and offers opportunities for birdwatching and other outdoor activities.
In general, the area around Civitavecchia is dotted with ancient towns from the Etruscan-Roman era, each rich in artifacts and historical evidence of that period, but also with parks and natural areas of rare beauty - besides the aforementioned Bracciano Park, the Vulci Oasis is also a must-see.
