Genoa developed as a trading centre ever since the Middle Ages and it is nowadays one of the crucial commercial hubs in our country, poised between Italy and France. During the Renaissance it was one of the most important Italian cultural reference points, hosting one of the first and most prestigious higher education centres. It is also known as the birthplace of Christopher Colombus, who contributed to shaping Genoa’s fame in the world as an active, bold maritime city. The city’s palaces and monuments date back to different eras and will make you travel through the many stages of history of art, from Gothic to Renaissance to Baroque to Neoclassicism, and of Genoa’s urban development and modernization. Stretching on a 34-kilometres-long arch on the Italian northwest coastal line, Genoa’s territory embraces a multifaceted identity, both from a cultural and from a panoramic point of view. Poised between mountains and seas, located right at the centre of the two sides of Ligurian Riviera, it a place where the soul can find almost anything it craves for. Genoa is also the perfect starting point to explore the coastal line and all its beautiful villages, such as Portofino, or embark upon a ferry directed to Sardinia or Corsica, where you can choose between beautiful fine white sand beaches and challenging hiking trails.
Presenting you with the richness offered by the territory in and around Genoa we knew that we would eventually won over any resistance you may had had towards this region. But one point remains unclear: what is the best means to explore this beautiful part of Italy at least expense of money and time? If you’re not familiar with Italian public transport, you may think train is the most romantic way of travelling along the coast. Unfortunately, the reality is very different: delays, malfunctions and service discontinuities are commonplace, especially on the coast and outside bigger cities. Assuming you do not wish to put all your precious vacation time at risk, we have the perfect solution for you: a car hire in Genoa will resolve all your travelling troubles, while also giving you the chance of choosing the most suitable vehicle for your needs at convenient rates. For instance, if you’re travelling with smaller kids and need a car that is both easy to drive and endowed with a spacious cosy cabin, you may opt to rent one of our MPVs, while if you’re a solo traveller, you will save up on hiring rates in Genoa by choosing a compact car which will also allow you to zigzag with maximum ease along the narrowest of alleys.
We’ve talked about visiting Genoa and exploring the coast, but what if you want to travel and see what the other Italian regions have to offer? Well, as we just told you, with Locauto you will get the chance of returning your car to a different office than the one you picked it from, so you can manage all the stages of your travel according to your personal wishes. What’s more, Genoa comes in handy for such purposes because it is the meeting point of some of the most important Italian highways: first of all, the A7 leading to Milan, then the A10 to Ventimiglia, the A12 to Rosignano Marittimo (beaches!) and the A26 to Gravellona Toce in Piedmont. Also, if you want to visit Tuscany you can reach it in a very short time from Genoa: a 2 hours drive will take you to Lucca and its majestic 400-years-old walls. Please note that if you’re travelling to Genoa ancient town centre, a traffic-restricted area is active there, so you can either choose to rent an electric car, and thus be free to enter that area at all times, park your car outside it or pay for a daily/weekly pass.

Built almost a thousand years ago, the Genoa cathedral is an exquisite example of Gothic architecture. The cathedral also hosts the Museum of the Treasury, a collection of jewellery and silverware from 9 AD.
Perched upon the rocks onto Ligurian Sea, Portofino is a colourful, lively town surrounded by a huge natural park with many hiking trails. A castle from the 15th century rises above the town.
Rising on the hills south-east of Genoa, Recco is worth a detour mostly because of its most celebrated food specialty: the local Focaccia di Recco, a flat oven-baked bread with cheese.
