Lying on the banks of river Po, Cremona is one of the most fascinating cities in Lombardy. Well known for the artisanal production of violins, it encloses a wonderful historic center of medieval origin, where some edifices in particular really stand out: first of all the actual symbol of the city, the “Torrazzo”, a stone tower measuring 112 meters in height with 502 steps from whose top, if you don’t feel dizzy, you can enjoy a breathtaking view over the entire city. In the same square where the Torrazzo stands tall, that is to say the Cathedral square, there are many other buildings that will make you turn your head in wonder for their beauty: the Cathedral itself, for instance, enclosing within its walls a series of marvelous frescos that got her the nickname of ‘Sistine Chapel of the Plain of the Po’; then the Baptistery, a Romanic building with the flooring and ceiling dating back to the Renaissance; and then again the red Loggia Dei Militi and the City Council Palace, which enrich the skyline of this square with their crenellated roofs.
To top this basic cultural tour of the city, you can visit the Violin Museum and the “Ala Ponzone” Civic Museum: the latter gathers many paintings, including one by Caravaggio and one by Arcimboldo, alongside with a series of ancient musical instruments. Those who prefer shopping instead will find the city center dotted with historical boutiques connected with local traditions, especially the food-related ones. Among the products you cannot deny yourself there is Cremona nougat, namely the one made by the two historical companies of the city, Vergari and Sperlari, also the protagonist of a fair held in October; there are also many options for cheese lovers, like the traditional Pannerone, as cheese is always present in every meal in Lombardy. If you have time to stop at a tavern or restaurant in Cremona, try boiled meat, another local food specialty.
Looking much alike both in name and style, although much smaller, and rising about 30 kms away from Cremona is the tiny town of Crema with its gorgeous historic city center, dotted with boutiques, historical coffee shops and extraordinary buildings. Another interesting destination close to Cremona is Soncino, a medieval hamlet which is really worth visiting for its majestic stronghold, anciently erected by the Sforza family and stage to many historic reenactments, parties and festivals, especially during summertime. Slow-tourism lovers will find many other interesting destinations in this territory for Sunday trips or short artistic tours spread over a few days and cities, including some from Emilia-Romagna region – the closest being Piacenza, Parma and Modena – and the nearest regional neighbor, Mantua.

Right outside the historic center, Saint Sigismondo Church, built in 1662, is decorated in the inside with a cycle of frescos which are some of the prettiest from Lombardy’s Mannerism.
