Alghero’s history is a very ancient one. The city – at least as we know it today, though on a smaller scale - was founded by the Genoese family of the Dorias in the 12th century, but in the previous centuries many other civilizations had settled here, leaving traces of their cultures all over the streets of Alghero: hundreds of nuraghes, the ancient Sardinian megalithic houses built between 1900 and 730 B.C., can still be spotted all around Alghero, while the city centre encloses some of the largest necropolises in pre-Nuragic Sardinia, like the necropolises of Anghelu Ruju and Santu Pedru. Among the populations that lived here in the past, probably the most important - in terms of the contribution they gave to shape the urban architecture, the culinary traditions and the language itself - were the Catalans and more specifically the Aragonese family, who built the great fortress which was meant to protect the city from sieges and attacks from enemies. The fortress of Alghero, which retains about 70% of its original structure, is still today one of the most cherished spots for citizens, with its promenade offering a great view on the sea and the historic city centre; the walk is sided by coral shops, restaurants and bars where people go to chill out at every time of the day. Tourists cherish as well the view they can enjoy from here while tasting Sardinian traditional dishes, like culurgiones (dumplings filled with potatoes, sheep’s cheese and fresh mint) or agliata, a typical garlic sauce used to season meats and fish. Alghero’s cuisine also features some dishes of Catalan origin, like the Sardinian version of paella or the so-called Catalan style lobster.
Visiting Alghero may be a great idea if you want to know more about Sardinia’s incredibly ancient history and this applies not just to Alghero city centre but also to the surrounding plains of the Nurra area, rich in landmarks of high historic, cultural and naturalistic overall value. If you are getting to Sardinia by plane, though, you may soon realize that exploring this territory by train or bus would be really hard due to the worrying situation of public transport: many people indeed choose to hire a car at Alghero airport so to be free to travel all through Sardinia, wherever they want to go, perhaps straying a little from the most mainstream touristic routes to get the chance of diving deep into Sardinian traditions, be they related to culinary arts or craftsmanship. The most romantic inlets and grottos, the most majestic mountains and amazing hiking trails await you adventurers: check Locauto’s range of cars for hire in Alghero and start planning your next trip to Sardinia right now!
