The first thing people picture in their minds when you talk to them about Syracuse is its market: a colorful, lively place where you can go taste and buy some of the best local products, such as nuts, juicy fruit and vegetables, cold cuts, cheese, citrus fruits and fresh fish. After this very first deep dive into Syracuse’s colors and smells, you can walk from the harbor nearby across a bridge to the Island of Ortigia, the most ancient part of the city where baroque edifices stand in line with Greek temples; you’ll be beguiled by the violent light that is reflected onto the limestone façades and by the lulling quiet of these places.
Bordering the Island of Ortigia is the Medieval Maniace Castle, yet another unmissable stop in your trip to Syracuse. Moreover, in the northern area of the city, you should visit the Neapolis archeological park, enclosing a Roman amphitheater, a huge Greek theater and an ancient limestone cave called Dionysus’s Ear, remarkable for the roaring echo you can hear inside of it. Strolling or driving downtown, you will also get many chances to savor traditional dishes and products stopping at one of the several cute coffee shops, restaurants and taverns that are spread throughout Syracuse.
If it’s your first time in Sicily, you should know that it’s really hard to move about the island with public transport, even when covering just a bunch of miles. The best way to travel through Sicily is definitely by car, which allows you to cut traveling time by at least 50%, if not more when trying to get to smaller hamlets. If you’re visiting Syracuse, there is plenty of tiny gems of architecture, art and gastronomy that you can’t absolutely miss: renting a car in Syracuse will get you to all those wonderful places easily and quickly, allotting to those small heavens all the time they’re worth.
Just a 40 minutes’ drive away from Syracuse is, for instance, Noto, a baroque jewel inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage list, particularly fascinating in May when, during a festival called “Infiorata”, all the balconies are embellished with fresh flowers. Proceeding westbound, you can also visit Marzamemi, notable for its stone houses and view over the sea, and Modica, known for its salty chocolate – the latter is divided into a “low” city, rich in monuments, and a “high” city with a panoramic view and dotted with lavish royal palaces. North of Syracuse you can visit the saltworks of Priolo, the natural habitat to over 200 different bird species, celebrated by many ancient poets.
