Halfway between two of the most beloved cities in central Italy, Florence and Perugia, Arezzo is a tiny Medieval treasure still preserving much of its ancient architectural heritage. The city is divided into two halves, the one above and the one below: the former prides itself in its historic palaces and it’s here you can see the most famous glimpses of the city; the latter is the reference point for night life, but also shopping thanks to its shops, boutiques and lively bars. Walking up towards the upper side of Arezzo, you will meet iconic landmarks such as St. Francis Square, where the namesake cathedral, enclosing a most famous cycle of frescos painted by Piero Della Francesca, stands tall.
Not far from here is the Museum of Modern and Medieval Art, within which works by Medieval artists from Florence, Siena and Perugia and showcased together with different kinds of artifacts. The city of Arezzo is also tied with the name of Vasari, one of the first and most notable Italian theorists of architecture: if you’re passionate about this topic, you can’t miss a visit to Casa Vasari, the artist’s former dwelling, featured by massive, beautiful frescoed halls.
A little bit farther from the city center, more precisely at the top of the Colle San Donato hill, in the north-eastern side of Arezzo, you can stroll along the walls of the Medici Fortress: built in the late 16th century and formerly a stronghold, it now encloses a city park at the impressive height of 300 meters, with a memorable view over the valley of the Arno river. At its exact center a monument dedicated to poet Francesco Petrarca stands out, and during Christmas time the park hosts open-air traditional markets where you can buy typical products and creative gifts for your dear ones.
Its decentralized position in reference to the main airports in Tuscany makes Arezzo an underrated destination for tourists, but hiring a car will allow you to reach this Medieval city in a very easy way. From here, you can travel towards other cities and little Medieval hamlets that are the region’s true boast. With Locauto you can rent a car in Arezzo and many other handy places in Tuscany so to plan your with a flexible schedule, without giving up on anything, including comfort. You can also choose to pick up and return your car to different Locauto points so as to optimize your route and the time you’re going to spend here.
Within the triangle formed by Tuscany, Emilia Romagna and Umbria there are many destinations worth a visit once you pick up your rental car in Arezzo. If you love nature, the Parco delle Foreste Casentinesi will suit your needs as an island of peace rich in waterfalls, shady beechwoods and tiny villages of very ancient origins. Landscapes lovers will especially thrive in Val D’Orcia, a valley with hills stretching from the south of Siena up to Mount Amiata which comprises historic hamlets such as Pienza and Montalcino, each boasting a prime wine and cheese production of their own; in the months of April and May, this area offers an unparalleled panorama when wild mustard, sainfoin and tulips all bloom at the same time painting the landscape yellow, red, violet and green as far as the eye can see.
The Val D’Orcia flowering is a natural event you really can’t miss. Alongside with this, we strongly recommend you to visit some of the hamlets closest to Arezzo, such as Anghiari, a Medieval settlement surrounded by massive walls, or Cortona, also of
Medieval origin: alongside with visiting the town, pay a visit to MAEC, the Museum of Etruscan civilization.
