If you’re familiar with the works of the greatest playwright of all times, William Shakespeare, you must know that he had a massive fascination for the city of Verona, where he set one of his plays and the so very famous drama of Romeo and Juliet. Juliet’s House in Verona is, in fact, one of the most popular city landmarks: the building dates back to the 13th century and comprises a bronze statue of Juliet that is said to bring good luck to lovers who touch it – if you’re travelling to Verona on your honey moon, that is exactly the kind of thing that will make it memorable! Of course, a few steps away there is also Romeo’s house: pay a homage to the world’s most famous couple by taking a picture of yourselves under its castellated brick wall and then proceed to Piazza Bra, the city’s largest square, lined with restaurants and cafés where you can drink an aperitif and chill out (did you know Spritz comes from Veneto region?). Next to Piazza Bra is Verona Arena, maybe the most famous landmark of the city together with Juliet’s balcony. The Arena is a Roman amphitheatre which is used still today as an opera venue. In recent times, it also began to host many rock and pop music concerts: Bruce Springsteen, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple and Muse all played here. Be sure to check what’s going on during your travelling time and book tickets in advance! Also, don’t forget that Verona has a great offer as far as theatre festivals are concerned too.
Many tourists love having the possibility of hiring a car at Verona airport because it makes them free to decide how long to stay in Verona and how many days to dedicate to more out-of-reach destinations. If you’re planning to spend more than a couple of days in Veneto, a rental car will indeed give you the freedom to fit a lot of excursions into your travelling plan and manage your daily schedule according to your expectations, down to the very slightest detail. One the most appreciated destinations both by Italians and foreigners is the so-called ‘Soave Wine Route’, an evocative route which stretches across the areas of the province of Verona where Soave wine – an internationally renowned DOC white wine – is made; apart from vineyards and cellars, which quite often offer mind-blowing wine tasting experiences, the route comprises also historic castles and churches, while the namesake hamlet of Soave is an extraordinary fortified medieval village. Another daily trip you can make with your rental car from Verona is to Villafranca di Verona, which is actually very close to the airport; the city offers a great number of Baroque churches and a magnificent castle where concerts and festivals are held during the summer: be sure to check the events that are going on during your vacation time so that you can enjoy Verona’s nightlife at its fullest!
