Bolzano's traffic guide for getting around by car

Di Locauto-

Visiting Bolzano on the road is the best way to discover the unique meeting point between Mediterranean culture and Central European tradition of the South Tyrolean capital: surrounded by vineyards and watched over by the Catinaccio massif, Bolzano offers a vibrant historic center that deserves to be explored slowly. However, given the city’s layout and strict traffic management, planning your arrival and parking in advance is essential to avoid fines and enjoy your visit without worries. Here is some useful information about driving and traffic in Bolzano.

Driving in Bolzano: what to know about the South Tyrolean capital

Traffic in Bolzano is characterized by a very large ZTL (limited traffic zone) that protects the entire historic center, with electronic checkpoints monitored 24 hours a day; access is reserved exclusively for residents and authorized vehicles. The roads surrounding the center can also become heavily congested during rush hours and during the famous Christmas Markets, when the city welcomes thousands of visitors.

The smartest way to experience Bolzano is to use a mixed mobility approach: once you leave your car in one of the peripheral hubs or underground parking facilities close to the center, you can move comfortably on foot, by bicycle (taking advantage of the excellent cycle path network) or using the efficient urban bus service.

Where to park in Bolzano

For those who want to arrive as close as possible to the heart of the city, the main solutions are structured parking facilities located mainly near Piazza Walther, in via Mayr Nusser (where the largest parking structure is located), and near the Fiera di Bolzano in the southern part of the city, close to the motorway exit.

Another option is the parking area of the Funivia del Renon, perfect for those who, after a walk through the historic center, want to reach the Renon plateau in just a few minutes to enjoy the cool air and the panorama over the Dolomiti. Finding free parking in Bolzano is difficult, if not practically impossible, especially during high season.

How to reach Bolzano: the best options

Finally, here are some practical directions to reach the city. By car, Bolzano is served by the Brenner motorway corridor. If you are coming from the south, the recommended exit is Bolzano Sud, which leads directly toward the trade fair area and interchange parking facilities; if you are arriving from the opposite direction, use the Bolzano Nord exit, which quickly leads toward the central parking areas. Remember that, although the city lies in a valley, winter equipment is mandatory during the cold season to deal with the surrounding mountain passes.

If you prefer travelling by train, the Stazione Centrale di Bolzano is located just two minutes on foot from Piazza Walther and the heart of the city and is served by high-speed trains as well as international DB-ÖBB connections. From the station, local trains also depart for Merano, Val Venosta and Val Pusteria, making Bolzano the perfect base for travellers moving without a car.

For those arriving by plane, the closest airport is the one in Bolzano, which offers seasonal connections and direct flights and is located about 6 km from the city center; it can be reached in about 15 minutes by taxi or via SASA bus connections. Alternatively, the airports of Verona and Bergamo are connected to Bolzano by frequent shuttle services and represent a practical solution for those landing from major international hubs.
