Are you thinking of choosing an island for your next summer getaway but craving an authentic and colorful atmosphere, far from the glitzy glamour of Capri or the trendy vibes of Ischia? A tour of Procida by car might be the perfect choice for you. With its multicolored houses, narrow alleys, and old-world maritime charm, this gem in the Gulf of Naples is sure to win you over. Discover our tips to help you plan your visit at its best!
To get to Procida with a car, the main departure port is Pozzuoli, located a short distance from Naples. Several ferry companies, including Caremar and SNAV, offer frequent crossings, with more options available during the high season, giving you plenty of flexibility to plan your trip.
The ferry ride from Pozzuoli to Procida is relatively short (about one hour), while the hydrofoil takes around 20–30 minutes but does not allow vehicles on board. So, if you wish to bring your car to the island, you'll need to take the ferry, which allows you to transport your vehicle to Procida without any issues. In any case, if you plan to bring your own car or a rental, it's recommended to book your ferry ticket in advance to ensure you get a spot.
Getting around Procida: do you need a car?
If you want to explore the island in all its vibrant beauty and reach its lesser-known corners, having a car can be very useful even though the island is relatively small and well connected by public transport.
Procida is known for its narrow, winding roads, with ups and downs linking its various villages and beaches. Having a car gives you the freedom to move around easily and make the most of your time, especially if you plan to visit several spots.
With your car, you can easily reach places like the picturesque Corricella, with its pastel-colored houses overlooking the sea; explore Terra Murata, home to a medieval village and the historic Palazzo d’Avalos; or head toward Chiaiolella, known for its long beach and seafood restaurants. For a day trip, we also recommend visiting Vivara, a small island connected to Procida by a bridge. It’s a protected natural reserve perfect for walks among Mediterranean vegetation. Please note: cars are not allowed on Vivara, but you can park in Procida.
In short, having a car gives you the flexibility to stop at scenic viewpoints, admire the island from different perspectives, and discover hidden coves along the coast. As mentioned earlier, Pozzuoli
is the main port for reaching Procida by car. You can easily get there by following road signs from Naples or other towns in the Campania region.
