How to get to Amalfi, traffic, restricted traffic zone and parking

Di Locauto-

With the arrival of the warm season, Amalfi becomes an increasingly popular destination: reaching it by car is not difficult, and here you’ll find all the useful information to plan your trip and your stop in this famous and charming coastal town, possibly before the high—and crowded—summer season begins.

How do you get to amalfi by car?

Amalfi is a must-see destination for those who love traveling along scenic roads, although it’s not for the faint of heart: its breathtaking curves and narrow hairpin turns require a certain level of driving attention, and not everyone—especially those who suffer from vertigo—feels comfortable driving along these cliffside roads.

For those willing to take on the challenge, the most convenient cities to start from are Naples and Salerno. From Naples, you can take the A3 highway to Castellammare di Stabia, then continue along the SS145 through the charming towns of the Sorrento Peninsula, or opt for the spectacular SS163 Amalfitana, known for its sea views and for being one of the most picturesque roads in Italy.

From Salerno, the SS163 is more direct, with a route of about 30 km winding between rocky cliffs and hidden coves. The drive to Amalfi is, in fact, part of the experience: a perfect stop on an itinerary exploring the Amalfi Coast, perhaps including visits to Ravello, Positano, and Vietri sul Mare. Recommended especially in the low season, when traffic is lighter, Amalfi offers an authentic experience filled with picturesque views, the scent of lemons, and an atmosphere that feels frozen in time.

Getting around amalfi: ztl and parking information

Once in Amalfi, it's important to know that the historic center is subject to a year-round Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL) to regulate vehicle access and preserve the tranquility of the village. Entry to the ZTL is permitted only to residents and a few authorized vehicles, so visitors must park outside the center.

Fortunately, there are several parking options near Amalfi’s center. The most convenient is the Luna Rossa parking lot, located in a tunnel carved into the rock between Amalfi and Atrani, just a few minutes' walk from the center. Alternatively, there’s the Porto parking lot, located right next to the seafront, but it is often crowded during the summer months.

Those looking for more affordable parking in Amalfi can consider private lots in neighboring towns, such as Scala or Ravello, and then head down to Amalfi by bus or on foot via scenic hiking paths. Given the difficulty of finding parking in high season, it's advisable to book in advance, especially if planning to arrive on a weekend.
