How to get to Courmayeur: traffic, limited traffic zones, and parking

Di Locauto-

Visiting Courmayeur on the road is one of the most enjoyable experiences for mountain lovers. This famous destination in the Aosta Valley, at the foot of Mont Blanc, combines nature, sports and alpine charm. Before you set off, however, it is useful to understand how local traffic works, where to park and the best way to reach the village.

Traffic in Courmayeur: what to know before you leave

Traffic management in Courmayeur is designed to protect the historic village and ensure a pleasant experience for visitors. The central streets are narrow, some areas are pedestrian-only, and during high season (Christmas, February–March, August and event weekends) traffic can increase, especially near the ski lifts and shopping district.

The best way to experience Courmayeur is to park and move around on foot, taking your time along Via Roma with its boutiques, cafés and pastry shops, or strolling towards the Dolonne area or along the trails that start from the centre. In the winter months and during major events, shuttles and dedicated services help with transport for ski equipment or other sports gear.

Where to park in Courmayeur and what to find nearby

Those arriving by car will find several parking options close to the centre of Courmayeur and the ski lifts. The Piazzale Monte Bianco car park is one of the most convenient places to leave your car and walk into the heart of the village. From here, just a few minutes are enough to reach Via Roma, sip a hot chocolate in a pastry shop, visit the Duca degli Abruzzi Alpine Museum or enjoy a relaxing walk along the Dora Baltea river.

For visitors coming to ski or head towards mountain huts and slopes, the Courmayeur cable car car park in the Dolonne area is the ideal choice. Just a few steps take you to the lifts and the sports area, from where several hiking routes also start in summer.

Those who prefer to avoid traffic can choose more peripheral car parks, often less crowded. From there you can walk to the centre or, during peak periods, use the shuttle services when active. This solution is particularly useful on weekends and public holidays when central spaces fill up quickly.

How to get to Courmayeur: practical options

To reach Courmayeur by car from Milan or Turin, take the A5 motorway and exit at Courmayeur. The road is comfortable and scenic, but in winter you must have winter tyres or snow chains on board. The advantage of arriving by car is the freedom to explore nearby valleys such as Val Ferret and Val Veny, surrounded by forests, glaciers and spectacular panoramas.

Those preferring public transport can reach Aosta by train and continue by bus. During certain seasons, direct connections from Turin and Milan are available, but the frequency may vary, so it is advisable to check the timetable in advance.

For travellers arriving by plane, Aosta airport is the closest option. Here you can rent a car, often the most convenient solution to reach Courmayeur in about an hour and then move around freely between lifts, trails and neighbouring villages.
