How to get to Sestri Levante, traffic, restricted traffic zone and parking
Anyone who has driven in Liguria at least once knows it: due to the narrow and mountainous nature of the region with its winding roads, often challenging weather conditions, and numerous traffic restrictions in tourist areas getting around can be quite the undertaking. Sestri Levante, with its two famous bays the Bay of Silence and the Bay of Fables is no exception. If you’re planning to visit this gem of the Eastern Riviera by car, here’s everything you need to know to avoid unnecessary stress and wasted time behind the wheel.
Why visit Sestri Levante
Nestled between green hills and sandy shores, Sestri Levante is one of the most charming towns in Liguria. Its historic center lies on a narrow isthmus between two bays, creating a truly unique landscape. Perfect for those seeking the sea, scenic walks, and stunning views, it also serves as a great base for exploring the Tigullio area, the Cinque Terre, and Portofino. In addition to its beaches, the town offers cultural events, quality cuisine, and a wide range of outdoor activities from hiking to kayaking.
While it is easily accessible via the A12 motorway (Genoa–Rosignano), be aware that traffic on the Aurelia road and the access routes can get heavy on summer weekends and holidays. It’s a good idea to travel during off-peak hours whenever possible to avoid spending more time in the car than necessary.
Access to Sestri Levante: ZTLs zones and hours
The historic center of Sestri Levante is protected by a Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL), active during the busiest tourist periods, generally from April to October. The main affected areas include Via XXV Aprile the pedestrian heart of the center with restaurants and shops the side streets leading to the Bay of Silence and the Descalzo seafront, as well as parts of Viale Rimembranza.
The ZTL typically operates from 10:30 AM to 6:30 PM on weekdays and until midnight on holidays and the days before. Access is allowed only for residents, authorized vehicles, or those with a temporary permit. However, some hotels and B&Bs located within the LTZ may offer temporary access authorization be sure to ask your accommodation if they provide this service before booking.
Where to park in Sestri Levante
Finding free parking in Sestri, especially during peak times, can be challenging. Most free spots are located in the Trigoso area or the hillside hamlets, which are far from the sea and require biking, walking, or using public transport to reach the center.
As for paid options, several are conveniently located for accessing the town center after parking. For instance, along Viale Dante, Via Nazionale, and near the train station, where hourly rates are around €2. Alternatively, you can choose the Sant’Anna multi-story car park or the parking lot at Piazzale Donatori di Sangue (near the station), which is large and also commonly used by commuters. The latter is about a 10–15 minute walk from the center and offers lower rates than more central options.
