How to get to Sirmione: traffic, limited traffic zones, and parking

Di Locauto-

With its Scaliger Castle that seems to float on the water and its thousand-year-old thermal baths, Sirmione is a must-stop on any respectable Lake Garda holiday. However, its narrow and elongated peninsula layout makes driving a real test of patience: for this reason, we have prepared a small survival guide to Sirmione’s traffic system that you can save and reread before your trip.

The ZTL in Sirmione and access to the historic center

The main piece of information you must keep in mind to avoid hefty fines is that Sirmione’s historic center is entirely covered by a ZTL (limited traffic zone). Access beyond the drawbridge of the Scaliger Castle is reserved exclusively for residents and guests of hotels located within the walls.

If you are staying in the center, you can communicate your license plate to your hotel in advance and you will be provided with a temporary permit to unload your luggage, but you will still need to park your car in designated or affiliated areas. If you are a day visitor, however, you cannot enter the old town by car at all. Fines, recorded by cameras active 24 hours a day, are issued immediately.

Where to park in Sirmione: strategic options

Since you cannot drive through the narrow streets, choosing the right parking in Sirmione becomes essential. Here are the main solutions:

  1. Monte Baldo Parking: it is the largest and closest to the entrance of the old town (about 500–800 meters). In high season it fills up quickly, so arriving early in the morning is advisable;
  2. Lungolago Diaz: a series of blue-lined parking spaces along the road leading to the castle. Very convenient, but spaces are limited;
  3. Colombare di Sirmione: if you want to save money and do not mind walking or taking a shuttle, you can park in the Colombare area, at the base of the peninsula. From here, a pleasant walk of about 2–3 km or a quick shuttle bus will take you straight to the castle.

During summer weekends, traffic on the state road leading to the peninsula can be heavy. Consider reaching Sirmione by lake boat from Desenzano or Peschiera: you will save stress and enjoy an unparalleled view.

How to get around Sirmione once you arrive

As you have probably understood by now, Sirmione is a town best experienced on foot: once you leave your car, the old town is a maze of pedestrian streets to be explored calmly and at a slow pace. To reach the Grotte di Catullo or Jamaica Beach (at the very tip of the peninsula), you can use the small electric train that departs near the thermal baths, ideal if you have children or if the heat becomes intense.

To visit the village and the castle, a few hours will be enough, but to enjoy the thermal baths, the Grotte di Catullo and a sunset over the lake, a full day or a relaxing weekend is ideal. You can then use a car, for example by renting one in Desenzano del Garda, to travel to the other Lake Garda villages or the main cities of Veneto and Lombardy.
