From Milan’s futuristic skyscrapers to the majestic Alpine peaks, from shimmering lakes to the quiet hills of the Oltrepò, Lombardy is a region of striking contrasts and with a well-planned road trip, you can uncover a surprising wealth of history and natural beauty. In this article, we’ll share some ideas for planning your journey to discover the best villages in Lombardy.
No Lombardy road trip would be complete without a drive along the shores of one of its lakes. Lake Como is our first destination, where driving allows you to follow the coastline and admire historic villas and villages nestled between water and mountains.
The eastern shore, in particular, offers the unmatched beauty of Varenna. This village, with its colorful houses perched above the lake and its famous Lovers’ Walk (Passeggiata degli Innamorati), is a romantic hideaway far from the crowds. Don’t miss the gardens of Villa Monastero for spectacular views.
Continuing along the coast, make a stop in Bellano, one of the Borghi più Belli d’Italia, famous for its spectacular Orrido, a canyon carved by the Pioverna River that can be visited via suspended walkways. The lakeside route offers wonderful views and the chance to explore the villages along the Lake Como Greenway while not fully drivable, the adjacent coastal roads provide the same magic.
We continue our exploration of Lombardy’s most beautiful villages
heading east, reaching the majestic Lake Garda on its Lombard shore. Here, Sirmione is the unmissable “pearl.” This town stands on a narrow peninsula dominated by the imposing Scaliger Castle. Its thermal baths and Roman ruins the famous Grotte di Catullo make it a unique place: touristy, yes, but absolutely worth visiting.
For a quieter experience, head south to Lake Iseo. Although the iconic Monte Isola the largest lake island in Italy is not accessible by car, the village of Peschiera Maraglio on the coast is the perfect starting point for a ferry ride and to admire the lake’s peaceful charm. The whole Franciacorta
area, just south of the lake, is ideal for a scenic drive among vineyards and top-quality wineries.
During summer months, the coastal roads around Lakes Como and Garda can be very busy, so consider taking ferries to cross the lakes especially on Lake Como to save time and enjoy a different perspective.
For those seeking Lombardy’s version of Tuscany’s rolling hills, look no further than the Oltrepò Pavese the “Tuscany of the North.” This area, south of Pavia, is a land of castles, excellent wines (sparkling above all), and villages that seem straight out of a fairy tale.
Fortunago and Zavattarello are the highlights of this itinerary: the former, with its stone houses and breathtaking views over the vineyards, is one of the Borghi più Belli d’Italia and a perfect stop for food and wine lovers; the latter is dominated by the magnificent Dal Verme Castle, an imposing medieval fortress rising from a rocky spur, seemingly watching over the entire valley.
These villages, along with others such as Varzi (famous for its PDO salami) and Golferenzo, are connected by quiet, scenic country roads
perfect for a leisurely drive with stops at wineries and tastings of local delicacies.
