The whole Franciacorta area, just south of the lake, is ideal for a scenic drive among vineyards and top-quality wineries.
During summer months, the coastal roads around Lakes Como and Garda can be very busy, so consider taking ferries to cross the lakes especially on Lake Como to save time and enjoy a different perspective.

Among hills and vineyards: the Oltrepò Pavese

For those seeking Lombardy’s version of Tuscany’s rolling hills, look no further than the Oltrepò Pavese the “Tuscany of the North.” This area, south of Pavia, is a land of castles, excellent wines (sparkling above all), and villages that seem straight out of a fairy tale.
Fortunago and Zavattarello are the highlights of this itinerary: the former, with its stone houses and breathtaking views over the vineyards, is one of the Borghi più Belli d’Italia and a perfect stop for food and wine lovers; the latter is dominated by the magnificent Dal Verme Castle, an imposing medieval fortress rising from a rocky spur, seemingly watching over the entire valley.
