Highway Toll Guide in Italy

Traveling on highways in Italy requires some simple precautions to efficiently manage entry, exit, and toll payments. Here’s everything you need to know.

Entering the Highway
When entering the highway, choose a lane with white or blue signage, stop at the toll booth, and take the ticket from the automatic dispenser. This ticket records your entry point and is necessary to calculate the toll upon exit. Never use lanes with yellow signage, as they are reserved exclusively for vehicles equipped with Telepass.

Exiting the Highway
At the exit toll booth, select the lane corresponding to your preferred payment method. White lanes allow cash payments (with change if needed), while blue lanes are dedicated to credit or debit card payments. Insert your ticket into the automatic machine: the system will calculate the toll based on the distance traveled. As with entry, avoid yellow lanes, which are reserved for Telepass-equipped vehicles.

Electronic Toll Highways
On some highways, such as the Pedemontana Lombarda, the payment system is fully electronic and does not include physical toll booths. On these routes, cameras installed at entry and exit points automatically record the vehicle’s license plate. The toll must be paid online within a set deadline (e.g., 15 days). To make the payment, simply visit the official highway website, enter the vehicle’s license plate number, and complete the transaction using a credit card or other available payment methods.

Winter Policy: Mandatory Winter Equipment

From November 15 to April 15, most Italian roads require vehicles to be equipped with winter gear, such as snow chains or winter tires, to ensure safety and compliance with regulations.

With Locauto, you won’t have to worry about any extra costs: winter safety devices, including snow chains and snow socks, are always included in the rental rate and already on board every vehicle.
This way, you can travel with peace of mind, even in adverse weather conditions.

Fuel Refueling: Choose the Most Convenient Option for You

With Locauto, you can select the refueling option that best suits your travel needs.

Full to Full
Return the vehicle with the same fuel level as when you picked it up, with no extra charges.

Full to Empty
If you prefer to avoid searching for a gas station before returning the car, you can prepay for a full tank at pickup and return the vehicle empty. Please note that unused fuel is non-refundable.

Refueling by Locauto
If you don’t have time to refuel, you can return the car without topping up. In this case, you will be charged for the fuel consumed plus a refueling service fee, as specified in the Special Rental Conditions available on our website.

Personal Accident Protection: Safety for the Driver

The Personal Accident Protection (PAI) is an additional service designed to give you extra peace of mind while driving. When activated, this coverage is provided by policies issued by leading Italian insurance companies and protects you in case of accidents occurring while driving the rented vehicle.
The protection applies exclusively to the driver and the vehicle for which the service was purchased, ensuring an added level of security during your journey. For more details, you can refer to the Insurance Policy Summary.
