Are you familiar with the history of Italian literature? If not, Pescara is, unsuspectedly, one of the best places to start your journey into it: the city is in fact the birthplace of one of our most renown authors of the XX century, that is to say Gabriele D’Annunzio, whose former home in Pescara city centre was turned into an amusing museum about his works and life. If you’re into art there is also a lot of other enjoyable places to visit in Pescara: for instance, the Romanesque Cathedral of Saint Cetteo, the Aurum Art Space and the Basilio Cascella Museum and Picture Gallery. Around sunset you can take a walk along Ponte del Mare, which is a modern bridge with one of the longest pedestrian and cycle routes in all Europe. The area around the port is very picturesque and colourful too: many festivals are held here during the summer and there is also a giant Ferris wheel standing here where you can hop on with your kids. Shops, pubs and night clubs are open till very late at night, so enjoy your time by finding the right place for you and your family or friends by browsing through the streets of the old town centre (a pedestrian area framed by Corso Umberto I, Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and Via Nicola Fabrizi). And don’t forget to taste some of the regional food specialties, such as arrosticini (skewered lamb or mutton), timballo abruzzese (similar to lasagna, but with the addition of vegetables and rice) or sagne e fagioli (homemade pasta with beans and tomato sauce).
After visiting the city, which will take a couple of days, you may decide to venture further and explore the natural beauties enshrined by the region of Abruzzo. There are, of course, many beautiful beaches between Pescara and Chieti, but there is also a lot to see in the inland, including charming medieval hamlets with the remnants of very ancient castles and walls. We particularly recommend you visiting Spoltore and Loreto Aprutino: the former comprises a must-see majestic Langobardic castle, while the latter is renown for the production of olive oil, which can make the perfect gift for your family and friends back at home who are mad about Italian cuisine. These places can be reached in just a 30 minutes’ drive from Pescara airport, while relying on public transport would multiply your transfer time by four. Hiring a car at Pescara airport is thus the best solution for you if you are planning not to stick to the city of Pescara only, but also discover what else the region has to offer. With Locauto you will be able to select your rental car from a wide variety of makes and models and will also have the liberty of choosing different pick-up and return locations if you wish to.
