Pesaro is an elegant, livable city overlooking the Adriatic Sea, where the sea, culture and nature coexist in perfect balance. Capital of northern Marche, it is known as the City of Music because it is the birthplace of the famous composer Gioachino Rossini. In recent years, it has also stood out for its high quality of life, sustainability policies and strong focus on slow mobility.
It’s well worth a visit because it caters to different tastes: well-kept and easily accessible beaches, a compact and walkable historic center, interesting museums and excellent local cuisine make it a destination suitable for families, couples and groups of friends alike. Key attractions include Rossini’s Birthplace, the National Rossini Museum, Piazza del Popolo with the Ducal Palace, and the Sfera Grande by Arnaldo Pomodoro, an iconic sculpture facing the sea. The Monte San Bartolo Natural Park is also not to be missed, especially for those who enjoy scenic views and outdoor walks.
For a first-time itinerary, start your morning in the historic center, visiting Rossini-related sites and stopping for a seafood lunch. In the afternoon, enjoy a stroll along the seafront or a bike ride on the Bicipolitana cycle network, one of the city’s symbols. At sunset, head up to Monte San Bartolo for breathtaking coastal views—a perfect way to discover the authentic soul of Pesaro.
Pesaro is also an excellent base for exploring the surrounding area, rich in historic villages, rolling hills and natural landscapes that are easy to reach by car. Just a few miles away is Gradara, with its beautifully preserved medieval castle linked to the story of Paolo and Francesca, one of the area’s most popular destinations. Inland, the UNESCO-listed city of Urbino offers an extraordinary concentration of Renaissance art, while along the coast you can visit Fano, Senigallia or the wilder beaches of the Conero area. The Monte San Bartolo area itself, stretching from Pesaro to Gabicce, also deserves multiple stops to be explored at a relaxed pace.
Those using Pesaro as a base can venture even further to discover some of the most fascinating natural attractions in Marche and nearby regions. Less than an hour’s drive away lies the Gola del Furlo, a stunning natural reserve with rocky gorges and panoramic trails, ideal for hiking, trekking and birdwatching. Heading further inland, the gentle hills of Montefeltro are dotted with villages such as Carpegna and Frontino, perfect for a day surrounded by nature, fresh air and local food.
Sea lovers can reach quieter coves along the northern or southern coast, or spend a full day at the Conero Regional Park, known for its white beaches, sea-view trails and crystal-clear waters. The Frasassi Caves, although requiring a bit more travel time, are also a spectacular option for a day trip. Thanks to a smooth road network and short distances, Pesaro allows visitors to easily combine culture, sea and nature, turning their stay into a varied and dynamic experience for those who enjoy exploring at their own pace.
To move freely between the city, the coast and the hills, renting a car in Pesaro is a practical and flexible solution, especially for travelers with limited time or those wishing to go beyond the most touristy routes. Having a car makes it easy to plan your itinerary independently, stop in small villages, discover traditional restaurants outside the center and enjoy the Marche region without time constraints. In this sense, Pesaro is not just a destination in itself, but an ideal base for a broader and more diverse journey. Book your car now for your preferred dates!
