How Monza’s ZTL works: hours, restrictions, and other key information

To protect the prestigious area surrounding the Royal Villa and its park, and to preserve the livability of the city center, Monza has established a large ZTL monitored by electronic gates, some of which are active 24 hours a day.
Below are the main restricted-access areas. Always check the official Monza Municipality website for the most up-to-date information on ZTL schedules:
• Historic Center ZTL: this is the smallest and most central area, including Via Italia and the streets around Piazza Duomo and the Arengario. Access is restricted or prohibited for unauthorized private vehicles, with cameras and gates operating 24/7;
• Royal Villa and Park Area: although the park is vast, car access to the inner and most valuable areas of the Royal Villa and Royal Gardens is strictly regulated and allowed only for authorized vehicles (residents, service vehicles, etc.);
• “Duomo” and “Arengario” ZTLs: specific central areas that may have their own schedules and rules, often extending restrictions into the evening and on holidays.

As always, it’s essential to pay close attention to road signs and notices marking the start of ZTL zones to avoid hefty fines. If you are staying at a hotel, ask the staff about the possibility of obtaining a temporary access permit through their agreement with the city.

Parking in Monza: where can you park for free?

Unfortunately, we have bad news: finding free parking in central Monza is virtually impossible. Most spaces are either paid or reserved for residents. The best solution is therefore to focus on parking lots outside the ZTL or on underground car parks.

Here are some useful options to consider:
• Park-and-Ride and Underground Car Parks: located near the ZTL boundaries and the train station, these allow you to leave your car and reach the center on foot within a few minutes. The most popular options include the Piazza Carducci Underground Car Park and Piazza Cambiaghi Car Park (often convenient and close to the center);
• Paid Parking (blue lines): these are widespread around the city center and near the station, with rates varying by area and parking duration. Enforcement is strict in central Monza, so make sure to pay regularly to avoid fines;
• Train Station Parking: convenient if you’re taking the train or want a well-connected reference point;
• Parking near the Royal Villa: if your goal is to visit the Park and the Villa, there are dedicated paid parking areas along the outer access roads, such as those near Viale Cavriga, which leads to the main entrance of the Park.
