The history of Taranto, a city stretching in between two seas, is a very peculiar one: when it was built, it used to be the only Spartan colony outside Greece; onto its ancient foundations, elements from different civilizations were later added. One of the buildings that best bears testimony to this is San Cataldo Cathedral, the oldest in the entire region: its Byzantine base was transformed through later Medieval and Baroque additions. Something completely different is the Concattedrale Gran Madre di Dio, located in the most modern area of Taranto and characterized by a steel and cement structure that is typical of contemporary religious buildings – it was, indeed, built in the 1970s.
You can walk back and forth the new and the old town through a swinging bridge dating back to the 19th century. This bridge, together with Aragonese Castle, is one of the most famous city symbols. Alongside with religious buildings, if you are passionate about history you will find plenty of options to enjoy your time in Taranto – for instance, you can visit the National Archeological Museum, enclosing an extensive art collection dating as back as the Neolithic age! Throughout the city, you can also visit many ancient necropolises.
You may also want to experience some quality time plunged in nature – the best destination in this case would be Palude La Vela Natural Reserve, which hosts a great deal of bird species. At the very heart of the city, though, you can’t miss Peripato Gardens, which extend over an area of five hectares and beguile all visitors and offer them the chance of enjoying a good stroll or open-air theater. As far as food is concerned, you won’t be disappointed by the typical Taranto dishes: local specialties include many fish-based dishes and old-but-gold cornerstones of Apulian gastronomy like panzerotti.
