A destination you can’t really miss if you are headed to the south of Italy are the Sassi Di Matera, literally Matera’s Rocks. These comprise the ancient stone houses of Basilicata region’s main city and make quite a picturesque scenery, especially at dusk, when the hills light up with a thousand different lights and make you feel like you are a living part of the surrounding natural environment. Cradled on the top of the Lucanian hills confining with Apulia region, Matera is a favourite among holiday destinations for anyone willing to venture on a road trip in Southern Italy: as it stands close to the Apulian city of Taranto and to the most beautiful seaside destinations of the confining region, Matera can easily be made a part of a marvellous trip digging through Italian most pristine sceneries. The city was built in different eras and so were the Sassi, divided into two separate districts: the Sasso Caveoso district, with its distinguishing caves, and the Sasso Baresano district, where stone houses crawl onto each other and are encircled by beautiful stone staircases. Both districts offer an unparalleled view over the valley of Gravina, which splits the ancient city into two halves. The historic centre rises in front of the Sassi and is rich in medieval churches and stunning palaces.
The main city of Basilicata region is no doubt rich in artistic and archaeological treasures and so are its surroundings. Renting a car in Matera is of course the best way to explore them, as it will give you the opportunity of visiting the mainland of Apulia and Basilicata, which is poorly connected with cities by public transport. There is a lot you can visit across Basilicata and Apulia region with your car, like the Historic Park of Matera Region, a magical place which is home to over 900 animal species, many of them being extremely rare, or Alberobello and Altamura in Apulia region. As summer can be very hot in southern Italy, an air-conditioned vehicle will make your transfers extremely comfortable and give you all the space you need to bring your luggage or sports equipment with you. When you book your rental car online with Locauto, you will also have the option of choosing different pick-up and drop-off locations, meaning that you can have your rental car with you until the very last second of your Italian holiday: for instance, if you are leaving from Bari airport, you can pick our Bari airport rental office as a return location. You can check all our rental offices in Italy on our website: we have plenty of them all over the country!
Matera can be reached roughly in a hour’s drive both from Bari and Taranto. The city has different restricted areas which comprise the Sassi districts and the historic centre: please check with our local staff for more information about limitations and permits when you get to our office in Matera. Please note that there are many parking lots near the entrances to the Sassi Di Matera areas where you can leave your car while you visit the ancient town. Consider equipping your car with a sat nav if you are unsure as to how traffic restrictions work in Matera.
