Rent a Matera
Among the most unmissable destinations in southern Italy are undoubtedly the so-called Sassi di Matera, the ancient stone dwellings in the capital of Basilicata. In this picturesque setting, made all the more memorable when, at sunset, the lights turn on the hills illuminating the entire ancient village, one almost has the impression of being at one with the surrounding nature. Perched on the Lucanian rocks bordering Apulia, Matera is one of the favorite destinations for those who decide to devote their vacations to an on-the-road trip in southern Italy: its proximity to Taranto and, in general, to the Ionian coast of Apulia, in fact, make it an unmissable stop for tourists looking for unspoiled and unique views. Passing through the city, one can appreciate all its different building peculiarities: if the distinctive element of the Sasso Caveoso district are the houses carved into the rock, the Sasso Baresano district is characterized by houses perched on top of each other and striking stone stairways. From both sassi one overlooks an exceptional panorama of the Gravina, the valley that runs through Matera. The historic center, on the other hand, facing the Sassi, is rich in medieval churches and splendid noble palaces.
Places of art and archaeological sites are not lacking in the Lucanian capital, but those who want to explore the surroundings of the city of the Sassi as well will find renting a car in Matera a valuable help: moving by car, in fact, will allow you to visit many hidden pearls between Puglia and Basilicata that can hardly be reached by public transportation. Moreover, during the summer season, you will suffer neither heat nor fatigue during your travels, carrying all the luggage you need with you without any problems. With Locauto, you will have the possibility to return your vehicle to the car rental office in Puglia or Basilicata that you prefer: if your return flight, for example, departed from Bari, you could conveniently return the car at the airport; conversely, if you preferred to face the return journey completely by car, you could rely on the Locauto office closest to where you live (we are present in the north, center and south of Italy, including the islands). For your tour of Puglia and Basilicata on the road, we especially recommend a stop in Altamura, an ancient city linked to the equally ancient production of a famous type of bread that you absolutely must try at least once in your life. Also in Puglia, another interesting destination-and also, like Matera, part of the UNESCO heritage list-is Alberobello, with its famous tufa buildings that are its symbol, the trulli. Very close to Matera, on the other hand, is the Murgia Materana Archaeological Park, located on the border with Puglia, home to more than 900 animal species, including several dozen rare or very rare species.
Matera can be reached in just an hour’s drive from either Bari or Taranto. The areas of the city that are not accessible by car correspond to the Sassi and the historic center: the main street that delimits the limited traffic zone is Via Lucana, near which you can find numerous parking lots where you can leave your car while you explore the city. We recommend that you equip yourself with a navigator so that you can better navigate your way through one-way streets and ZTLs.
