Chosen as the Capital of Italian Culture for two consecutive years, in 2020 and 2021, home of a prestigious University, Parma is an ancient city with a great cultural and culinary heritage. Its historic center encloses assets of Medieval architecture such as the Cathedral, dedicated to Virgin Mary, and the Baptistery, the main buildings of Duomo Square, both built in a Romanesque style, although with some later Renaissance interpolations, which treasure gorgeous frescos. Not very far from here, in Piazzale Della Pace, rises the Palazzo Della Pilotta, a royal palace dating back to the 16th-17th centuries, the ancient dwelling of the Farnese dukes. If you have more than one day to spare, it’s worth visiting the Archeological Museum, one of the most ancient museums in Italy, situated inside the palace and holding many exemplars connected with the ancient Roman past of the city alongside with ancient Egyptian artifacts.
Crossing the Parma, the city’s namesake brook, you can reach the Duke of Parma’s Park, the place of choice for all citizens for strolls, sports and leisure time in general thanks to its wide boulevards lined by trees and extensive lawns, a magical, vast place brimming with statues and little temples. Parma is a great touristic destination for gourmands as wells, offering fabulous choices for every course and meal: from appetizers with fried dough and cold cuts (namely the crudo di Parma and the culatello), to fresh stuffed pasta like the anolini, cooked and served in hot broth and the tortel dols from Colorno (dumplings stuffed with cooked wine and mostarda), ending with the rosa di Parma, beef tenderloin rolled up in Parma ham and sliced Parmesan cheese. And what about dessert? Well, a slice of sbrisolata is in order, better if served with a glass of grappa or straw wine.
Easy to reach thanks to its central position between the Plain of the Po and the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, Parma is the ideal destination for a car trip with a same-day return for visitors coming from the confining provinces and regions. A few kilometers away from the city there is also an airport serving those who wish to visit Parma and come from further. Parma can be a great starting point to make a tour of Emilia-Romagna on the road and enjoy its unparalleled artistic and culinary attractions. And what’s better than renting a car in Parma to live such an experience with the greatest comfort and flexibility, exploring, from here, all the destinations you want at your own pace and will, without having to renounce on any thrilling last-minute detours?

Definitely worth a visit is the Cathedral Square, where the Cathedral, the Baptistery and the Bishop’s palace still stand perfectly preserved after 1000 years.
A monumental complex built around the end of the 16th century by Ottavio Farnese as an annex of the near Bishop’s palace, it is now home to the National Archeological Museum and the Farnese Theater.
From the Middle Ages on, it is possible here to enjoy masterpieces of painting by Beato Angelico, Parmigianino, Tintoretto and other representatives of the Italian and international history of art.
Within the Palazzo Della Pilotta is the Farnese Theater, raised in the second decade of the 17th century and endowed with a remarkably advanced structure for the age it was built in.
