Lying at the top of a hill, the historic center of Frosinone showcases many testimonies from the ancient Roman age, among which an amphitheater, some thermal springs and several houses; many relics are gathered inside the city’s archeologic museum, while the archeological site with the amphitheater is an open-air visiting area. The majority of the ancient hamlet was swept away by an earthquake in the 14th century, therefore the city displays many new buildings next to the last remains of ancient civilizations. Among the 19th-century buildings, the Palazzo Della Provincia stands out in that it encloses several statues and paintings from authors of the likes of Cataldi, Guttuso and Mastroianni.
A quite placid city, Frosinone also has a big park in its hilly part representing the place of choice for those who love open-air activities: here you can find many rest stops and children’s playgrounds, as well as colorful views to photograph when rose plants are in bloom. Those who enjoy strolling will find another nice spot in the Villa Comunale “Contessa De Matthaeis”, restored in 2002 and featured by an alternation of long hedges, flowerbeds and a mixed-tree grove in the lawn area that citizens use as a sports ground.
Much more enthralling than the city center is actually the province of Frosinone, presenting numerous landmarks that can be of interest both to nature enthusiasts and those who enjoy architecture and history, and in any case for gourmands: it is indeed quite easy to stumble in typical inns where you can enjoy, at ridiculous prices, the specialties of the Ciociaria area, such as the classic “soup with bread below”, many different meat dishes, notably lamb and sheep rolls, roast and skewers, and scrumptious desserts to finish off your meal, like the wine doughnuts or the “tozzetti” with almonds, the Frosinone equivalent of the Tuscan “cantuccini”.
Once properly refreshed with this hearty food, you will be free to enjoy the surroundings of the city, comprising several castles that are easy to reach by renting a car in Frosinone. One of the most evocative is the one in Isola del Liri, a small Medieval hamlet lying on the banks of river Liri, which forms, right in the historic center, an impressive 27-meters-high waterfall. On the Erici hills you may also want to visit Fiuggi, also Medieval but with some later Art Nouveau interpolations, hosting very famous and beguiling hot springs. If you’re passionate about history, you can’t miss Cassino, the second biggest city in the province, almost wiped away during WW2 and hence known with the infamous nickname of “Martyr City”: alongside with the ruins of Casinum, the ancient Roman settlement, you can visit many WW2 symbolic places, like the Polish military cemetery, the Memorial Museum of the Polish 2nd Army Corps and the Historiale Museum.

A gorgeous fluvial Medieval hamlet, it especially takes pride in its castle and the two waterfalls that mark the historic center.
In the very heart of the old town, in the upper side of Frosinone, you can behold several relics of the ancient Roman settlement.
A strategic point for many a battle ever since days gone by, Cassino is most of all a huge memorial of the Second World War.
Lying on the Sacco river valley, the birthplace of four popes, founded, according to the legend, by the god Saturn, it is rich in Romanesque churches and loggias.
