Some historians trace the foundation of Genoa back to the Neolithic age, somewhere between the fifth and fourth millennium before Christ; from its original core on the hill now corresponding to Cavour square, the hamlet developed into one of the most powerful cities between the 11th and the 18th century AD. Genoa indeed became an independent Republic assembling numerous commercial colonies spread all over the Mediterranean sea. Its contemporary architecture is the result of the fusion of the ancient town with the confining municipalities which were added to it over time and of the reconstruction of the buildings damaged by the bombings of World War II, which sum up to 25% of overall Genoa buildings. Liguria’s main town is thus a multifaceted city with a strong commercial attitude but also endowed with a powerful historic fascination; wide portions of its historic centre are indeed inscribed in UNESCO’s World Heritage List, such as the system of the New Streets and the Palaces of the Lists (in Italian: Le Strade Nuove e I Palazzi dei Rolli), which comprises a complex of streets and palaces previously belonging to aristocratic families dating back to the 16th century and after. All over the city you can also find multiple religious buildings of Christian and Hebrew tradition, Romanic paintings and much more. Such a lot of beauty to soak in for ancient history and art lovers all around the world!
The history of the development of Genoa itself over the centuries left it and its surroundings scattered with multiple traces of artistic and historic relevance. Together with the beauty of Liguria’s natural settings, they create the perfect mix for visitors from all over Italy and Europe to enjoy their vacation time. Hills and mountains make it very difficult, though, to transfer from one place to another by public transport, so that it’s practically mandatory to use a private car to enjoy at the fullest one’s holiday here. This may be okay for residents who can rely on their own vehicle, but what about travellers coming to Liguria from other countries by plane? Renting a car at Genoa airport is of course the most efficient way to handle their logistic matters perfectly: you can simply drop off your plane, exit the arrivals gate and head directly to Locauto offices at Genoa airport to get the car you booked online and start exploring the beaches and magical hamlets near Genoa – such as Camogli, Rapallo or Portofino - with no further delay. With Locauto you can also choose to pick up and drop off your rental car in different locations, which means you can extend your travel to the Italo-French borders or reach any other Italian region by car during the time of your rental. Be sure to check all our rental offices in Liguria region and book your return flight accordingly!
Genoa city airport is very easy to reach by car: the interchange makes it possible to reach the city centre in a very little time and it is equally easy to get to the major destinations along the two Rivieras and to the main cities in the nearest regions (Tuscany, Lombardy and Piedmont). You can also reach Genoa ‘Cristoforo Colombo’ airport by bus from the city’s main railway stations (including Piazza Principe and Brignole) in about half an hour, which comes in very handy for travellers heading to Genoa by train from other Italian cities.
