Placed at the very heart of Mincio Park, a famous wide natural area rich in archeological sites, Mantua, the city of Gonzaga family, presents you from the very beginning with a remarkable visiting card: the city’s silhouette indeed stands out for its vibrant profile of red bricks at the end of the two bridges that connect it to the mainland. Such a vision, especially in winter months, when Mantua is plunged into fog, has something mystical to it. Walking across its streets we are returned with its purest atmosphere, halfway between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, with its porticos, pebbled streets and fancy crenellated palaces. Among the most renowned jewels of its historical center there is Tower Della Gabbia, a medieval structure restored in the 16th century which overlooks Piazza Sordello, a square where some of the most fascinating buildings of the city can be found: Palazzo Ducale, the Cathedral and Palazzo Vescovile. The square adjoins Prato di Castello through a majestic entrance with frescoed arches: through it you can enter Saint George’s castle, another priority landmark for anyone visiting Mantua. Alongside being home to one of the most appreciated cultural festivals in Italy, that is Festivaletteratura, Mantua is also an inspirational place for gourmands: among the city’s culinary specialties, people show particular appreciation for pumpkin dumplings, capunsei (gnocchi made with bread) and risotto with frogs; as regards desserts, the most loved ones are sbrisolona and bignolata, respectively a crunchy pie made with two different types of flour and almonds and a cake made with deep-fried pastries covered in chocolate, zabaglione and cream. As far as wines are concerned, there are many DOC labels to choose from, with which to accompany the strong-bodied dishes of Mantuan kitchen.
The location of the city, at the crossroads between Lombardy, Veneto and Emilia Romagna, makes it an interesting cultural hybrid with elements from different regional traditions, and an excellent starting point or home base to discover these three regions’ beauties. From Mantua, it’s easy to reach the motorways and highways that allow you to travel towards the most beautiful medieval hamlets in the surrounding area: during your trip on the road, you can make stops in Sabbioneta, a tiny Renaissance pearl in full Gonzaga style, Solferino, with its stronghold and museum of Italian Risorgimento, and Revere, where one of the Gonzaga family’s most beautiful villas rises. If you love breathtaking natural displays, you can visit the natural reserve in Bosco Fontana, while a little bit further northbound you will find Lake Garda with all the lively little towns that dot its banks and its tourist attractions, like the numerous, famous amusement parks that you can visit with your family.
