Those who visit Pavia for the first time usually start their tour a little far off from the city, where one of its most poignant landmarks is. We’re talking about the Certosa di Pavia, a monastery that Galeazzo Visconti erected at the end of the 15th century to celebrate his wife Catherine - a Renaissance façade match with Gothic interiors covered with pieces of art by authors of the likes of Perugino and Pinturicchio, and two cloisters with the monks’ cells. A fifteen minutes’ drive away from here is the Visconti Castle, an imposing palace which was once connected to the monastery through a magnificent park. This is also the seat of the City Museum and the Malaspina Picture Gallery, which encloses both Italian (especially Venetian) and French masterpieces.
A stone’s throw away from here is the historic city center of Pavia, separated from the neighborhood of Borgo Ticino by the river Ticino. These two sides of the city are connected by a covered bridge which was completely rebuilt after WW2 on the model of the original 14th-century drawings. Borgo Ticino is one of the most fascinating places in town because of its intimate clubs and restaurants.
Another great scenery for meetings is Piazza Della Vittoria, close to the Cathedral and at the intersection of the two most important shopping streets. Here are some of the prettiest historic buildings in the city center, including Broletto (the former bishop’s palace), the so-called ‘Red House’ (a Medieval private home named after the materials used for its construction, such as faux brick and terracotta) and the Church of San Nicolò Della Moneta. Another pivotal presence in the city’s skyline is its towers, which, curiously enough, were meant neither as a defense nor as cheap housings, but as an outright symbol of power.
Pavia lies at the intersection of territories that are widely known for their richness of natural and artistic assents, also including several historic hamlets and cities. Car rentals in Pavia are a useful service to explore the area enclosed by the rivers Po and Ticino, dotted with many a castle: among them, the most significant one, also known as the ‘Versailles of Lombardy’, is Chignolo Po, originally meant as a housing solution for pilgrims headed to the close-by Abbey of Saint Cristina. If you’re looking for something more modern, you may want to drop by Gravellona Lomellina, a small village surrounded by rice fields renown for its beautiful murals, which make it an open-air museum.
Not distant from here, about 30 kilometers away from Milan, is one the most interesting destinations for outdoor activities, that is the Three Lakes Park: by renting a car in Pavia, you can reach it in less than an hour and spend there a few hours or a relaxing weekend together with your family and friends. All in all, there’s plenty of choices when it comes to organizing a trip to Pavia and its surroundings and thanks to our rental office you can do it very comfortably with a modern vehicle that meets all your budget requirements. Although it cannot be considered the most beautiful church in Pavia, it is definitely the most impressive, arising from the union of two preexisting Romanesque churches.
This church is renown all over Europe because it contains the remains of Saint Augustine, to whom the presbytery’s marble sarcophagus is also dedicated.
Deemed as one of the most beautiful hamlets in Italy, Zavattarello is a Medieval hilltop village surrounded by vineyards, parish churches and abbeys. Don’t miss the castle!
