What To See And Do In Asti

Notwithstanding being just a 50 minutes’ drive away from Turin, Asti is not the first city in Piedmont to come to a tourist’s mind when thinking about an out-of-town trip. Nonetheless, renown are its typical products, namely wines, its true economy booster, so why not combine a first-rate food and wine tour with a thorough downtown exploration? The namesake city of the Moscato wine is indeed a marvel of Medieval architecture with later Art Nouveau interpolations, which you can see for instance in Corso Alfieri, the main street of shopping, night clubs, and one of the main arteries of the historic center.

Gothic is the Santa Maria Assunta and San Gottardo’s Cathedral, built around the 10th century with the exception of the bell tower, which dates back to the year 1266. Another symbol of the city is the Trojan Tower, also known as simply as the Clock Tower: its bell has indeed always been an important presence for the people of Asti, whose lives follow its tolls. Other towers stand in the middle of the city center, for instance the Tower of San Secondo, dating even earlier as its first segment was built in the ancient Roman age, and was then expanded through the addition of a tuff segment around the year 1000. It then became the bell tower of the Church of San Secondo, dedicated to the patron saint of the city. Another relic of Roman origin is the 1st-century-AD Domus in Verrone street, rich in mosaics which are a rarity for this area..

Strolling by the streets of the city center, the red of the bricks used for the Medieval edifices and the majestic porticoes from the 19th century really stand out, making Asti a lavish, elegant, grand city. As said before, Asti fascinates tourists also because of its wine and food offer: although you can try it first-hand in any time of the year, it’s worth making a stop here in September, when they organize one of the most important wine competitions in Italy, the Douja D’Or, where you can taste the outstanding products of the nearby wineries. At the same time is run a big fair, the Festival Delle Sagre, attended by representatives of every municipality in the Asti province cooking and selling their own specialties, totaling more than 80 different dishes. An event to mark in your calendar together with the Palio, a horse race organized at the end of August in Piazza Campo Del Palio, a huge square close to the city railway station.

Why Hire A Car In Asti

Such a wine heaven calls for a rental car to explore not just Asti, but its surroundings as well with ease and comfort. The staff at the local wineries are always ready to welcome visitors with kindness and professionalism, and guide them through the discovery of the red and sparkling white wines made in the Monferrato, Langhe and Barbaresco areas, also known for the production of truffles.

Easy to reach by car are also some of the nicest hamlets in the Asti province, such as Moncalvo: notwithstanding being the smallest town in Italy, its museum hosts several works from painters like Modigliani and Chagall; this is also a good place to taste some good local wines whilst walking across Medieval alleys. Up north you can make a trip to Acqui Terme, known for its thermal springs and the cutting-edge treatments they offer for motor and respiratory rehabilitation. A monumental swimming pool took the place of the old thermal springs in 1932 – this is a great place to push the torment of summer hotness away for a couple of hours.
