What to see and do in and around Cagliari

It is not unusual for foreigners to wonder whether Sardinia is or is not a part of Italy. The doubt may arise not only for geographical reasons, but also when it comes to comparing the traditions of this region to what people commonly know about Italy as a whole. Sardinia is indeed a very peculiar region: it is the result of a mingling of different cultures and religions along the centuries, whose traces are scattered all over the Island. Almost every town, even the tiniest, has its own culinary and artisanal traditions and when confronting the idea of visiting Sardinia on holiday one may feel overwhelmed by the cultural vastness that is to be faced. If you are visiting Sardinia for the first time, maybe the best thing is to pick an area and try to explore it the best you can, without leaving out important historical and artistic landmarks: in fact, one may feel tempted to stick to sunbathing only, but truth be told there is so much more to see and do on this island. Take for example the area around Cagliari: a weekend may suffice to visit all the city and enjoy it at the fullest, strolling around the Marina with its colourful shops and restaurants; anyway, many daily trips are possible departing from Cagliari, like the ancient Roman ruins of Nora and the town of Aritzo on mount Gennargentu, where you can buy traditional handicraft products or taste local cheese and wine and even go hiking. Take a look at the bottom of this page to find some other interesting travelling hints!

Why hiring a car at Cagliari Airport

Due to its natural conformation, which, despite common beliefs, is mainly mountainous, public transport in Sardinia is quite sparse and unreliable. Car rentals in Cagliari are thus the best option if you wish to map out all important landmarks in southern Sardinia in the span of a week or two. A car hire will indeed give you the freedom of travelling far and wide and be able of carrying with you even bulkier equipment such as rental surfs. Our fleet comprises all-terrain vehicles suited for off-road purposes (don’t forget that getting to some beaches could be tricky too!), but if you’re planning to stick to more touristy trails we can offer you a much wider range of vehicles, from compact cars to estates and family MPVs. Of course all vehicles are equipped with air conditioning and highly performant engines: we don’t want neither you or your car to struggle with Sardinia’s scorching hot summers! Browse our fleet now and check availability online by selecting your vacation dates.

Driving to and from Cagliari airport

Cagliari airport is not far from the city centre: you will need just a 20 minutes’ drive on a toll-free motorway to get there. Along the way, you may consider the idea of taking a few detours to see some of the major historical and natural landmarks around Cagliari, for instance the Castle of San Michele, a medieval castle now hosting a Centre of Art and Culture, or the Molentargius Regional Park southeast of Cagliari, a wetland extending over an area of about 1600 hectares which hosts many freshwater and saltwater protected species, including the biggest flocks of flamingos you will ever see. If you’re travelling to the city center, please note that there are 6 different restricted areas there, so be sure to park outside their borders if you don’t want to get fines. Electric vehicles are admitted at all times, so you can opt to hire one of them if you are planning to spend a lot of time downtown.
