Trapani is one of the most ancient cities in the Mediterranean Sea. Many different civilizations have been living in its territory along the centuries, but it was the Phoenicians who first appreciated its strategic location and turned it into a crucial seaport. They also gave Trapani its majestic defensive walls, a part of which– the Pali and Peliade towers near the harbour - still resists the passing of time. After the Phoenicians, Trapani was first colonized by the Romans, then by the Arabians, the Normans, the Catalans and, lastly, the royal family of the Savoia: each one of them left their peculiar mark onto the city, whose intricated identity is a mix of these very different cultures and their own peculiar artistic styles, mixed together in a quite graceful and natural way. You will see many instances of such a mingling of cultures while walking down the streets of Trapani: in a few hundreds of meters’ space, you will encounter the Baroque façade of San Lorenzo Cathedral, then the Art Nouveau central Post office and the neoclassical outline of Villa Margherita, plunged into the peaceful shade of centuries-old ficuses. And if you are looking for the ideal place to detach yourself from the din of the city, you can go astray in Trapani salt fields, located within a natural reserve, which offer great views at sunset, when the silhouettes of ancient Norman windmills almost seem to ignite on the background of a multicoloured, breathtaking sky.
