One of the least known cities in Tuscany, Prato has a lively commercial fabric, propelled especially by the textile and handicraft sectors, which thrive in the outer circle of the city bordering with the two very close provinces of Pistoia and Florence. Within its gorgeous Medieval historic center, which is all about alleys and Romanesque architecture, several boutiques, coffee houses, bars and restaurants all bundle up together with international apparel retailers, crowded at every time of the day.
The impression you get from visiting Prato for a day or even just a bunch of hours is one of a lively city, with a marked multiculturality and great night life that make it similar to much more famous Italian cities. One the best destinations in the city center is the Emperor’s Castle, built between the 11th and the 16th centuries, originally at Frederick II’s, the Holy Roman Emperor’s will: it can be visited all year round and it makes the perfect observation deck for those who want to enjoy an aerial view of the city; in summertime, the location becomes the stage for open-air film showings.
Dating back roughly to the same age as the Castle are Prato city walls, which are in great part still intact; among its 6 gates, the Mercatale Gate opens up onto the namesake square, overlooked by many food and drink outlets and used as a meeting point due to the abundance of parking spots. Alongside with its historic buildings, located mainly around the Duomo and Township squares, many pivotal cultural centers can be found in Prato as well, such as the Teatro Metastasio, the Teatro Politeama, a venue for contemporary performances, the Luigi Pecci Contemporary Art Museum and the Museum of Deportation and Italian Resistance, this one located out of the city walls, on the way to Vaiano.
