Its unique atmosphere, conjured by the romantic pebbled alleys and the sweet view of green hills all around, lures visitors from all over the world every year. If you are lucky, you may also stumble into a musical festival or two, as this kind of events is not rare here: Perugia indeed hosts one of the most valuable jazz musical festivals in Italy, the Umbria Jazz festival. What is true for Rome or Florence is also true for Perugia: not only is the city centre rich in beautiful historic landmarks (such as the Fontana Maggiore, a monumental medieval fountain placed between the gothic palace of Palazzo Dei Priori and the Roman Catholic Cathedral dedicated to Saint Lawrence), but its surroundings are also thriving with artistic and natural treasures. One of them is surely Assisi, a very famous hamlet near Perugia with an ancient spiritual tradition, as it is the birthplace of Saint Francis, who founded the Franciscan religious order in 1208. Other than being part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list and an important destination for pilgrims from all over the world, an absolute peace stems from its alleys, greenery and ancient churches. Near Perugia are also many more medieval hamlets, each of them with a story to tell and combining history with a great food and wine offer, such as Montone, Gubbio and Città di Castello. For those who wish to plunge into nature and soak in the beautiful view of Umbrian hills, it is also a good idea to plan a trip to lake Trasimeno and the surrounding area, where you can buy handcrafted products such as crochet linen and pottery to bring back home with you. All the most important historical buildings in Perugia overlook the medieval square of Piazza IV Novembre, where the amazing Fontana Maggiore stands.
This Gothic-styled building was once the seat of the municipality of Perugia. Inside it you will find the beautiful Sala Delle Udienze, painted by Perugino between the 15th and 16th
century.
It is the main church of the city and it was designed in the 14th century but never entirely built. Inside the cloister you can visit the Museo Capitolare.
These are the remains of a fortress once commissioned by Pope Paul III, which was destroyed and rebuilt many times and which now incorporates a kind of underground city that can be visited.
