Useful information

Liability in case of damage or theft of the rented vehicle

In case of damage or theft of the vehicle during the rental, you will be required to cover a maximum amount, defined as “Damage Excess” and “Theft Excess,” or “Theft Excess in Campania and Puglia.” This amount will remain your responsibility, except as provided in Art. 11 Of the General Rental Terms and Conditions.

Winter Policy: mandatory winter equipment

From November 15 to April 15, on most Italian roads it is compulsory to travel with winter equipment, such as snow chains or winter tires, to ensure safety and compliance with regulations.

With Locauto, you won’t have to worry about any extra costs: winter safety equipment, such as chains and snow socks, are always included in the rental rate and already on board every vehicle.
So you can face your journey with peace of mind, even in adverse weather conditions.

Guide to highway tolls in Italy

Traveling on the highway in Italy requires a few simple tricks to better manage entering, exiting and paying tolls. Here’s everything you need to know.

Highway entry
When you enter the highway, choose a lane with white or blue markings, stop at the toll booth, and collect your ticket from the automatic ticket machine. This ticket will record your point of entry and will be needed to calculate the toll when you exit. Never use lanes with yellow markings, which are reserved exclusively for vehicles equipped with Telepass.

Exit the highway

At the exit toll booth, select the lane corresponding to the payment method you wish to use. The white lanes allow payment in cash (with possible change), while the blue lanes are dedicated to payment by credit or debit card. Insert the ticket in the automatic ticket machine: the system will calculate the amount based on the distance traveled. Also when exiting, avoid the yellow lanes, which are intended for vehicles with Telepass.

Electronic toll highways

On some highways, such as the Pedemontana Lombarda, the payment system is fully electronic and does not involve physical toll booths. On these sections, cameras installed at entrances and exits automatically record the vehicle’s license plate. The toll must be paid online within a set period (e.g., 15 days). To make the payment, simply log on to the highway’s official website, enter the vehicle’s license plate and complete the transaction by credit card or other available methods.

Refueling: choose the option most convenient for you

With Locauto, you can choose the fueling mode that best suits your travel needs.

Full to full

With this option, you return the vehicle with the same level of fuel present at the time of pickup, at no additional cost.

Full to empty

If you prefer to avoid searching for a gas station before drop-off, you can pre-pay for a full tank at pick-up and return the car with an empty tank. Keep in mind that unused fuel will not be refunded.

Refueling by Locauto

If you do not have time to refuel, you can return the car without refueling. In this case, you will pay Locauto the cost of the fuel consumed plus an additional charge for the refueling service, as indicated in the Special Rental Terms and Conditions available on the website.

Accident Protection: safety for the driver

Accident Protection (PAI) is an additional service designed to provide you with greater peace of mind while driving. If activated, this coverage is guaranteed by policies taken out with leading Italian insurance companies and protects you in the event of an accident occurring while driving the rented vehicle.
The protection applies only to the driver and the vehicle for which the service was purchased, ensuring an extra level of safety while traveling. For more information you can consult
the Extract of Insurance Terms and Conditions.

Driving Abroad: in what countries you can drive in your rental vehicle

Locauto allows you to drive the rented vehicle not only in Italy, but also abroad. Driving is allowed in all European Union countries, as well as Norway, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
Before you go on a trip across the border, we recommend that you check for any specific requirements and local road traffic regulations.
