Traffic Information, Limited Traffic Zones, and Parking in Padua

Traffic Information
6 October 2026

With the Basilica of Saint Anthony, the Scrovegni Chapel, and the historic squares in the city center, Padua is an ideal destination for a weekend filled with art, history, and culture. However, those arriving by car should be aware of certain traffic restrictions: the historic center is part of a Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL), and finding parking in the most central areas can be challenging. Before you set out, here’s the key information on Padua’s traffic conditions, its Limited Traffic Zones (ZTLs), and the best spots to park your car.

How Padua’s Limited Traffic Zone Works

Padua’s restricted traffic zone (ZTL ) covers the historic center and is divided into two areas, designated Zone A and Zone B. The two zones have different rules and access hours, and traffic is controlled through electronic checkpoints:

  • Zone A is subject to traffic restrictions on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. and on holidays from 2:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.;
  • Zone B, which includes the area around the squares, is subject to restrictions every day, 24 hours a day. Within the restricted traffic zone (ZTL), the speed limit is 30 km/h.

Also keep in mind that in this city, in addition to the entry points, the monitoring system also includes cameras installed at the exits: it is therefore not enough to enter the restricted traffic zone (ZTL) during permitted hours; you must also ensure that you have left the area by the specified time. For the most up-to-date schedule, we recommend checking the City of Padua’s website.

For those driving a rental car, this recommendation is particularly useful: before setting the GPS, it’s best to find a parking spot outside the ZTL and drive there using the permitted routes.

Where to Park in Padua

Speaking of parking, Padua has several parking areas both inside and outside the historic center, as well as park-and-ride facilities connected to the public transportation network. For sightseeing, leaving your car in areas outside the Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL) can be a practical solution, especially if you want to avoid driving through the historic center.

Parking space availability and rates may vary by zone. The City periodically adjusts parking regulations by introducing or modifying paid parking spaces and areas designated for residents, loading and unloading, or transit, especially during construction, public events, and city-wide gatherings. The City publishes the relevant ordinances in advance, so it is advisable to check the latest announcements on the website before your trip.

Air quality restrictions can also affect traffic flow at certain times of the year. However, the city provides a convenient information service dedicated to anti-smog measures, which are generally in effect from October 1 through April 30 and may vary depending on the PM10 alert level.
