Traffic Information, Limited Traffic Zones, and Parking in Ferrara

27 October 2026

From the Castello Estense to the Palazzo dei Diamanti, winding through medieval streets and Renaissance squares, Ferrara is an ideal destination for a weekend of art and culture. The city is also known for its city walls, which surround the historic center and offer picturesque routes to explore on foot or by bike. If you’re arriving by car, however, it’s important to know the main traffic rules and find a parking spot in advance: here’s what you need to know about Ferrara’s traffic, the restricted traffic zone (ZTL), and parking options.

Ferrara’s Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL): How It Works

The historic center of Ferrara is divided into four restricted-traffic zones, identified by the letters A, B, C, and D. To enter the restricted areas, you must have a valid permit: the City offers various types of permits, ranging from daily permits to permanent, annual, or quarterly permits, intended for those who meet the requirements set forth in the regulations. It is therefore important not to assume that you can reach any address in the historic center by car.

Within the historic center, there are additional restrictions, particularly in the Duomo Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL), which includes some of the most central streets and squares, such as Corso Martiri della Libertà and Piazza Cattedrale.

In these areas, access is permitted only to vehicles with a specific permit. Some road sections are also subject to restrictions during certain hours. Before setting out, it is therefore advisable to consult the official map of restricted traffic zones (ZTL) and electronic checkpoints published by the city and to pay attention to road signs, rather than relying solely on your GPS.

Where to Park in Ferrara

To visit the historic center without worrying about traffic restrictions, the most practical solution is to leave your car in one of the parking lots near the city walls and continue on foot.

Available parking areas include the Centro Storico parking lot on Via Baluardo San Giacomo, the parking lot on Via Darsena, and the one on Baluardo San Lorenzo. There is also the Ex Mof area on Via Darsena, where you can check access and parking conditions before arriving.

Rates, availability, and payment methods may vary depending on the facility and the type of parking. For this reason, especially during peak periods, it is advisable to check the latest information and decide in advance where to park your car.

Events and Activities: When to Be More Careful

Throughout the year, Ferrara hosts various cultural events and festivals that can attract large numbers of visitors and increase traffic in the city center.

Among the best-known events is the Palio di Ferrara, a historic festival rooted in the city’s traditions, featuring activities and reenactments that take place throughout the historic center. The Ferrara Buskers Festival, dedicated to street performers, also brings the city’s streets and squares to life with shows and concerts. Another recurring event is the Ferrara Film Festival, dedicated to independent and international cinema, which attracts audiences and guests throughout the festival.

During these events, temporary traffic changes, parking restrictions, or detours may be in effect. If your visit coincides with an event, it is therefore a good idea to check the city’s announcements and confirm the locations of parking lots in advance.

How to Get Around Ferrara by Car

Ferrara is particularly well-suited for exploring on foot or by bike, thanks to the relatively short distances between many of its attractions and the paths that run along the city walls. A car is especially useful for getting to the city and exploring the surrounding area, but it isn’t necessarily the most convenient way to get around the historic center. If you’re traveling with a rental car, find a parking spot before you set out and make sure your route doesn’t go through a restricted traffic zone (ZTL). This way, you can easily reach your destination without risking driving on streets reserved for authorized vehicles.
