Traffic Information, Limited Traffic Zones, and Parking in Mantua

Traffic Information
5 November 2026

Surrounded by the waters of the lakes formed by the Mincio River, Mantua is a city of art where Renaissance architecture coexists with a natural landscape that is unusual for an urban center. Its skyline is dominated by the Castle of San Giorgio and the Ducal Palace complex—all must-see sites, along with the Basilica of Sant’Andrea, the Rotunda of San Lorenzo, and Palazzo Te, famous for its frescoes by Giulio Romano. Visiting Mantua means enjoying a mix of art, history, walks along the water, and traditional cuisine; for those arriving by car, however, it’s helpful to be aware of the restricted-traffic zones and choose the parking lot that best suits your itinerary. Here you’ll find all the most useful information on Mantua’s traffic conditions and some tips on how to plan your visit.

A city of lakes, squares, and Renaissance palaces

Mantua’s urban layout is closely linked to the landscape: the Upper, Middle, and Lower Lakes surround the city and define its silhouette, creating a seamless connection between the historic center and the natural environment. The hydraulic system that regulates the course of the Mincio River dates back to the 12th century and still helps define Mantua’s distinctive landscape today. Along the riverbanks, there are walking and biking paths that offer different views of the monuments and city walls.

The historic center is best explored on foot: choose Piazza Sordello as the ideal starting point to admire the Palazzo Ducale complex and the Duomo; not far from here, Piazza delle Erbe features buildings from different eras, including the Palazzo della Ragione and the Rotonda di San Lorenzo. The Basilica of Sant’Andrea, on the other hand, designed by Leon Battista Alberti, is one of the city’s finest examples of Renaissance architecture. Just outside the oldest part of the city lies Palazzo Te, a villa commissioned by Federico II Gonzaga and designed by Giulio Romano, famous for its frescoed rooms and the spectacular Camera dei Giganti.

This concentration of points of interest makes Mantua a great destination for a multi-day visit: in addition to the monuments, you can spend time exploring museums, taking walks along the lakes, and sampling local culinary specialties.

Mantua’s Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL): How to Avoid Unauthorized Entry

The historic center is subject to several Limited Traffic Zones (ZTL), with access restricted to residents and authorized vehicles. Piazza Mantegna, for example, is located within a ZTL and cannot be freely accessed by car. The rules may vary from one zone to another: before setting your GPS, it’s therefore important to check your route and pay attention to signs and electronic gates.

The City refers you to the ASTER service for up-to-date information on restricted-traffic zones and paid parking areas. If you are staying at a property located in the historic center, it is advisable to ask in advance whether there are procedures for temporary access and to provide your vehicle’s license plate number, without assuming that a hotel reservation automatically authorizes you to drive through the area.

Where to Park in Mantua

For those who want to reach the city center without entering the restricted traffic zone (ZTL), a convenient option is the free parking lot at Campo Canoa, connected to the center by a free shuttle. Another option is the parking lot near Palazzo Te, which is also connected by a shuttle service. These park-and-ride facilities allow you to leave your car away from the most central streets and continue on without worrying about traffic restrictions.

Those who prefer to park closer to the city center may want to consider paid parking facilities, such as the Piazza Virgiliana parking lot or the Mantova Gonzaga Parking lot on Lungolago Gonzaga. The choice depends on your destination and the length of your visit: if you plan to spend several hours visiting museums and monuments, it may be more convenient to leave your car at a park-and-ride facility and get around on foot.

Events and Peak Visitation Periods

Throughout the year, Mantua hosts cultural events and festivals that can attract large numbers of visitors and result in temporary changes to traffic flow or parking regulations. Among the events to keep in mind is the Festivaletteratura, dedicated to author talks and the world of books, which brings various parts of the city to life. Even events related to the world of motorsports, such as the Gran Premio Nuvolari, may require special management of parking areas and traffic flow. For the 2026 edition of the Gran Premio Nuvolari, for example, ASTER published specific guidelines regarding changes to parking regulations for tour buses.

If your visit coincides with an event, it’s a good idea to check the announcements from the city and ASTER before you leave. Once you’ve parked your car, Mantua is perfect for exploring at a leisurely pace on foot: with its squares, palaces, and lakeside promenades, getting around becomes an integral part of the visit.
