Inscribed into the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995, Ferrara is a city of ancient origins whose fame is closely connected to that of the Este family. Under the aegis of such an important and powerful noble family, the city indeed experienced, from the half of the 13th century on, three consecutive golden centuries, when it developed architecturally and gathered within itself the finest artists, people of letters and musicians of that age. To name but one, the poet Ludovico Ariosto, born in Reggio Emilia, a symbol of Italian Renaissance and Baroque who was to influence to a great extent the European literature of the following century; his tomb can be found inside the Biblioteca Ariostea, a public library dating back to the 13th century which enshrines many manuscripts connected to this author.
The distinctive feature of Ferrara are the red bricks with which many of its historical buildings are made. They rise along bewitching cobbled alleys of medieval origins. Walking through archways and crossing little bridges you can quickly visit the entire city center and its most outstanding edifices: the Cathedral, with its marble façade dating back to the 12th century, the Clock Tower, remodeled many times between the 15th and the 17th century, and obviously the awesome Estense Castle, home to a permanent exhibition which deals with the history of the city and the Este family, alongside with temporary painting exhibits. After so much wandering around, especially during the hot summer season, you can make a stop at a bar, restaurant or tavern and tone yourself up eating some local food specialty prepared in compliance with Ferrara and Emilia-Romagna traditions. What to choose? Surely fresh pasta, which plays a prime role in the local kitchen, with an endless series of different pasta shapes like cappellacci, cappelletti, tagliatelle, lasagne and much more; meat lovers will also enjoy cured meats and cold cuts accompanied by Ferrara typical bread, the “coppia ferrarese”.
