Rent a Sondrio
Sondrio is an authentic and welcoming city surrounded by the mountains of Valtellina, where nature, culture and tradition coexist in harmony. A provincial capital, it retains an elegant, Alpine soul, with a well-kept historic center, Renaissance palaces and noble residences that tell its story. Always a landmark of the Lombardy Alps, in recent years it has also distinguished itself for its livability, the quality of its environment and its rich wine and food heritage, making it a must-see for those who love local products and unspoiled landscapes. It is worth a visit because it offers a perfect mix of city and mountain: museums and castles alongside nature trails and a culinary offering based on age-old traditions. Highlights include the historic center with Piazza Garibaldi, Castel Masegra with its Museum of the Alps, and the MVSA, the civic museum that tells the story of Valtellina’s history and culture. Don’t miss a walk along the banks of the Adda River, or a stop at a historic winery that produces Nebbiolo delle Alpi, known locally as Valtellina Superiore. For a first itinerary, the advice is to start in the heart of the city in the morning, visiting Castel Masegra, the museums and the most characteristic streets, indulging in a lunch break of pizzoccheri, sciatt and local cheeses. In the afternoon, you can take a walk on the Sentiero Valtellina (Valtellina Trail) or reach the village of Sassella to see the famous vineyard terraces. Ending the day in a mountain trattoria or with a Valtellina aperitif is the best way to discover the authentic identity of Sondrio.
Sondrio is also the ideal starting point for exploring all of Valtellina, rich in villages, side valleys and natural landscapes that are easily reached by car. Just a few minutes from the center opens up Valmalenco, a paradise for hikers and mountain enthusiasts, with alpine lakes, scenic mountain huts and ski facilities that turn the valley into a perfect year-round destination. Moving then eastward, one quickly arrives in Tirano, a historic city from which the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Bernina Red Train departs, traversing breathtaking views to St. Moritz. Those who choose Sondrio as their base can go even further and discover some of the naturalistic and cultural wonders of Valtellina. In less than an hour, you can reach Bormio, famous for its natural hot springs nestled in the mountains, while toward the upper valley you can reach Santa Caterina Valfurva and the Stelvio National Park, perfect for trekking and wildlife spotting. Along the way, there is no shortage of small villages rich in history, frescoed churches, vineyards and viewpoints worth a stop. Nature lovers can also explore the Parco delle Orobie Valtellinesi, a reserve that spreads right around Sondrio, or head to the chestnut groves and landscapes of the nearby Rhaetian Alps. Depending on the season, it is possible to combine wine tasting, outdoor sports, cultural visits and relaxation, all within a short distance. To move comfortably between cities, valleys and peaks without time constraints, renting a car in Sondrio is a practical and flexible solution, ideal for those who want to build their own itinerary day by day and discover Valtellina at their own pace. With a car, every detour can turn into a discovery, every village becomes easily accessible, and the journey acquires an authentic and adventurous character: discover now the cars available on the dates of your interest using the search engine on this page!
The Sondrio rental office is conveniently located for road connections: if you are arriving from Lecco, when you reach the SS38 in the direction of Tirano-Bormio take the Sondrio Centro exit and follow for Tirano-Bormio alongside the railway. Then drive along via Stelvio until you reach the first traffic light where you need to turn right and cross the level crossing. Finally, turn right twice and you will find the office at the end of the street.
