How do you use a self-service gas pump?

Driving tips
13 July 2026

Walking into a gas station and finding yourself in front of a solitary pump, without the help of an attendant, can cause a moment of hesitation, especially for beginners or those who are abroad. Yet, learning how to use self-service gas stations not only allows you to save significantly on the price per liter but also gives you the freedom to fill up at any time, day or night.

Self-Service Gas: A Practical Guide to Getting It Right Every Time

The cost difference between “attended” and “self-service” options has now become significant, prompting more and more drivers to fill up on their own. Let’s go over the basic steps to understand how to fill up with gas at a self-service station stress-free and in complete safety.

1. Fuel Selection and Placement

First of all, pull up to the correct fuel pump. It may seem obvious, but make sure the fuel cap is on the side of the pump. Turn off the engine, and if you’re not sure what type of fuel to use, check the label inside the fuel door (green for gasoline, black for diesel).

2. Paying at the self-service counter: cash or card?

To understand how to use the self-service gas pump, you must first interact with the self-service kiosk. There are at least two options available:

  1. If you pay in cash, you’ll need to insert the bills and then fill up, but be careful: the machines don’t give change, but they do issue a credit receipt that you can redeem later if you don’t use the entire amount;
  2. If you pay by card, you’ll need to insert the card into the slot, enter your PIN, and wait for authorization. The system usually “pre-authorizes” a maximum amount (about 100–120 euros), but it will only charge you for the amount actually dispensed.

At some gas stations, you can also pay for gasoline or diesel using Satispay or fuel cards.

3. How to Fill Up at a Self-Service Gas Station

Once you’ve selected the pump number at the register, return to your car. If you plan to fill the tank completely, here’s how to fill up at a self-service station: insert the nozzle all the way into the fuel filler neck, then press the lever and lock it in place with the small metal hook (if present) or hold it down; the flow will stop automatically with a metallic “click” as soon as the fuel touches the tip of the nozzle. Do not force any more gas in after the click to avoid spills.

In total, the process takes about 3 to 5 minutes. It’s a daily routine that, once you’ve mastered it, will save you valuable time and money on your commutes.
