Traffic Information, Limited Traffic Zones, and Parking in Sorrento
Sorrento is one of the most popular destinations in Campania: its town center overlooking the Gulf of Naples, its panoramic terraces, its historic center, and its proximity to the Amalfi Coast make it a very popular base for exploring the area. It’s possible to get there by car, but—especially during the busiest months—it’s important to familiarize yourself with the traffic rules in advance and plan for parking. Here you’ll find all the key information you need to navigate Sorrento’s roads.
Sorrento’s restricted traffic zone (ZTL) is seasonal. In 2026, it will be in effect from April 1 through October 25, every day from 7:30 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. the following day, and on holidays, also from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The system is monitored by four electronic checkpoints located on Via Fuorimura, Corso Italia, Via Correale, and Via San Francesco.
Access to the Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL) is restricted to authorized categories and requires a special permit issued upon request. The City also offers an online service for applying for temporary permits based on documented needs (e.g., disability).
For those arriving in Sorrento by car, it is particularly important to be aware of the restricted traffic zone (ZTL) hours. During the period when the ZTL is in effect, a route that is normally permitted during the day may be subject to restrictions in the evening. The presence of an electronic checkpoint also means it’s essential to pay attention to road signs before entering the affected road, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the local traffic conditions.
Finding parking in downtown Sorrento can be challenging, especially during the tourist season. If you’re visiting as a tourist, it’s therefore advisable to find a parking spot before entering the downtown area, and to check for any temporary restrictions.
Among the municipal facilities is the Achille Lauro parking lot, located near Via Correale and directly linked to the management of the restricted traffic zone (ZTL). The City operates a dedicated service for managing the parking lot and related procedures.
A car is especially useful for getting to Sorrento and exploring the towns on the peninsula, but it isn’t always the most practical way to get around downtown. Narrow streets, seasonal traffic, and limited parking make it more convenient to leave your car at a parking facility and continue on foot.
Guests staying at a hotel or other lodging facility should also ask in advance whether the facility has parking and what directions it provides for reaching it without violating the restricted traffic zone (ZTL) regulations.
