Traffic Information, Limited Traffic Zones, and Parking in Parma

Traffic Information
12 October 2026

Parma is an interesting destination not only for its artistic heritage but also for its cuisine: the Duomo, the Farnese Theater, and the historic center are complemented by a culinary tradition known far beyond the borders of Emilia. Visitors arriving by car can choose to drive their own vehicle or rent a car, but it’s a good idea to plan ahead to avoid areas with traffic restrictions. Here’s what you need to know about traffic, restricted traffic zones (ZTL), and parking in Parma.

How Parma’s Limited Traffic Zone Works

Parma’s historic center includes several Limited Traffic Zones, designated as ZTL 1, ZTL 2, and ZTL 3, as well as other areas with specific traffic restrictions. Access is also controlled via electronic gates, and whether a vehicle is permitted to enter depends on its category and whether the driver has a permit. The City manages the permit and enforcement system through Infomobility, a company also responsible for managing public parking and mobility-related services.

When driving through the city center, it’s important not to confuse a parking spot near tourist attractions withpermission to drive through Parma’s restricted traffic zone (ZTL): the presence of a parking space does not automatically mean you’re allowed to reach it by driving down any street. Before setting out, it is therefore advisable to check your route and, above all, verify whether the road you’ve chosen passes through a ZTL. Road signs and instructions at the entry points always take precedence over your GPS’s directions.

Where to Park in Parma

For those visiting the city by car, paid parking lots and parking facilities allow you to leave your car near the city center and continue your visit on foot. Facilities managed as part of the city’s parking system include, among others, DUS, Fleming, and Lanfranco. The city also lists numerous paid on-street parking areas.

The General Urban Traffic Plan designates various parking zones, each with different hours and rules: before parking your car, you should therefore always check the signs at the location. When visiting the historic center, the most practical option is often to park in an area outside the zones with the strictest restrictions and continue on foot. Parma has a compact downtown area, where many of the main attractions are located within walking distance of one another.
