Bari is located in the southernmost region of Italy, Apulia, and rises onto the Adriatic sea. Originally built at the time of the Roman Empire, it underwent many transformations as ages passed by and is now rich in many Romanesque, Baroque as well as Art Nouveau buildings: an example of the former is the Basilica of San Nicola in the centre of Bari, while the Teatro Margherita (an historic theatre soon to be converted into a museum) was designed by architect Francesco de Giglio in 1912-1914. As a coastal city, Bari has also a fantastic promenade which stretches for about a kilometre offering beautiful sights onto the Mediterranean sea; before the sun sets, you can of course enjoy the sea air lying on the golden sand of San Francesco beach, on the eastern side of the old town centre. There are many bars along the promenade where you can sit down, have a drink and relax till very late at night, while if you are looking for a bit of art, here you can also find a gallery which collects works from the Middle Ages up to the Romantic era with a strong focus on Apulian artists.
Bari owns a very amiable position, halfway the Apulian coast, allowing you to get almost anywhere in the region in a very little time. Bari has also its own airport, where you can hire a car and travel comfortably towards your next destination. If you’re travelling to Bari next spring or summer, other than visiting the city you can thus decide to rent a car and make some daily trips inland so to discover other Apulian entrancing hidden towns. One of the most interesting places to visit near Bari (just a hour’s drive away from it) is Altamura, which will provide you with plenty of fantastic views such as the remnants of its ancient walls and its massive cathedral in the old town centre; here you can also taste a very old type of bread freshly baked everyday. The Alta Murgia National Park is another destination you can reach in just a hour’s drive westwards and it’s the last example of Mediterranean steppe, also hosting a castle built by Frederick II as a hunting lodge. Scroll down to the bottom of this page to get more suggestions on the landmarks to include in your vacation plan and book your car now online or download our free iOs/Android App called Elefast to discover what cars are eligible for smart booking: you won’t have to check in at our offices and will be able to pick up your rental car at Bari airport as soon as you exit the Arrivals Gate!
Bari airport is very close to the city centre, which can be reached in about 20 minutes’ drive. Traffic is usually very loose to and from the airport, while parking lots can be found quite easily close to the old town centre. As we mentioned before, the airport has a very good location for travellers directed to different areas of Apulia region, the main ones being connected to it via toll-free fast motorways. Just remember that the road pavement can be sometimes uneven, so pay attention to the street while you drive so to dodge any hole with your car.
